Obama is the lynchpin of neoliberal failure:

- no bankers went to jail for the financial crisis
- no punishment for Bush era crimes including torture
- no reigning in open market manipulation and illegal activity of tech disruptors like Uber
- refused to reform the filibuster
- drone wars expanded
obama ramped up the use of drone strikes (10x more than bush!) and deported a record number of immigrants. he helped maintain and expand the systems trump is now using to do his crimes
I miss the times when the worst thing a President did was wear a tan suit

just to break down the profoundly degraded discursive state we're in
PROTESTORS: the president is not a king! no kings in this country!
PRESIDENT: [posts video of self in crown, shitting on citizens]
PRESIDENT'S FRIEND: there is a king. King Jesus
NOBODY IN PRESS ROOM: you've missed the point

I think the synthesis take was that friction was an undesirable thing which produced desirable side effects: it was annoying to have to search through the limited selection of the blockbuster or whatever, but you also were forced to broaden your horizons and got introduced to new things
Yeah, I think it is an impoverished take to see frictionless streaming from your couch as just an improved version of what was happening with video stores. There is that aspect, but there is true loss in the physical-digital switch and we needn’t pretend there’s not.
I’m gonna counterpoint this one: browsing was part of the fun. And browsing in the physical world is different from browsing in the virtual world.

The things that sucked about Blockbuster were primarily late fees and it being hard to find a new release on a Friday night.

anyway if you wanted to cripple the US economy you only really have to 9/11 like three AWS server farms apparently?

The tech weirdos on here will be all “Bluesky users are deranged anti-AI zealots” while they’re simultaneously arguing the slop box should have control over whether you live or die

Hey, so another piece of advice for people who are S-Corps: there is a company called Opolis that acts as your employer of record and will provide health insurance and other benefits.
If you're a writer/other creator in the United States, consider creating an LLC for your business and then signing up for a local area Chamber of Commerce. Many of them have health insurance plans that pool their members and members of other CoCs to create insurance efficiencies relative to ACA.

(Unsubstantiated Claim) I feel like there's actually quite a bit of low to mid budget games in a broad variety of genres still coming out, but they're poorly marketed and drowned out by the sheer quantity of shit being released+you're not getting them from your big name companies like capcom anymore

the aws outage should be evidence that running half the internet on a single company's servers is a terrible idea but i fear nothing will change

i don't know if it's possible but i think all games should ship with a "oh you're so smart, huh?" mode where you turn it on and it removes all the guide-paint

Carmelita's taking her cosplay a little bit far ... as long as she doesn't steal anything, I guess.

it's genuinely shocking how much orks carried the first space marine

I did not realize just how much them not being in a game would make the second game less fun, lol

"I think it's fine to use AI for concepting as long as it doesn't make it into the final game" is a statement that will never fail to set me off
Oh god I do this thank you for putting words on it

I always wondered why France had so many heists but if you can still just put a ladder up to a window on the Louvre in the year 2025 and get away with a big bag full of priceless jewels I guess that solves the mystery

To be fair, if I were a French guy that dressed like this and I heard the Louvre had been robbed I would 100% be hanging around and aura farming.
This photo accompanying a news story about the heist at the Louvre is perfection.

the funniest thing about this AI bubble is all the phone companies desperately trying to market it, but the function is fucking useless so it's just commercials of barely complete humans pointing their phones at plants and going "DO THEY HATE ME"
This person is paying OpenAI two hundred dollars a month to have a chatbot gaslight them about making an excel spreadsheet

I DO NOT WANT INTERNET OF THINGS I WANT INTERNET WITH THINGS AND THOSE THINGS ARE MY FRIENDS WHO MAKE INCREDIBLE ART AND JOKES AND SHARE WHAT MAKES THEM FIND BEAUTY IN THIS GODFORSAKEN WORLD. DEATH TO CONTENT LIFE TO ART DEATH TO ALGORITHMS LIFE TO SHOWING ME YOUR COOL THING.
It's a stark reminder that endings are a thing for stories and that by this continuation existing it means that there's still plenty of problems to address and things to fix.
Having done a 1979 rewatch and moved on to Zeta...it hits in a genuinely depressing way. Nobody gets done dirty when they show back up but like...no you shouldn't be here you should be enjoying a happy ending you won! Oh right the creeping fascism of the federation. Fuck.

It also is less shocking when you know they were only doing it to offer them money to get the games onto GOG, which I think is a net positive for everyone involved.
