There is no need to follow me back. I am just a freshly minted PhD student, trying to find a philosophical topic to write my dissertation on (while harboring a passion for Japan). I follow you because I find what you do interesting. That’s all.

Wait, so, shoveling an infinite amount of money into a technology that demonstrates time and time again that it doesn't live up to expectations was NOT a sound investment?

I'm sure it's fine. Who even remembers the so-called "2008 financial crisis"? I'm pretty sure it blew over basically unnoticed

You can’t hate fascists and use AI slop generators. They’re the same thing: total destruction of truth at scale.

@adriandaub.bsky.social expertly dissects Thiel‘s obsession with the antichrist, Armageddon and scapegoats - and Thiel‘s own unreality: „Overall, the picture of Thiel that emerges in these lectures is someone desperately trying to disidentify from their own power.“

When I’m accused of “technopessimism“ I counter that I’m not “pessimistic about technology“; I am opposed to the economic, political, and social project of upward wealth transfer that “AI” is being leveraged to bring about. If that phrasing is useful to others, then go ahead and use it.

People think the first thing Gutenberg printed was the Bible. This is false. The first things he printed were a political prophecy, propaganda about the Turks’ threat to Christendom, & a popular school text. If you want a parallel to AI, that’s it: making $ from conspiracies, racism, & school slop.

Weird thing where people say “no one could have predicted it” when really what they mean is their political commitments and orientation were such that they ignored everyone who was predicting it

Sorry but “no one could have“ and you having your head stuck up your ass are two different situations

the answer to the trolley problem is not to pick who to sacrifice, it’s to dismantle the system that led to an unsafe trolley crossing.

if any part of your morality strategy involves picking a group to let die on a hill, throw the entire strategy out. it’s wrong.

Altered Calvin and Hobbes cartoon.

First panel. Calvin's dad says, "what story would you like to read tonight? Anything except..."

Calvin: "The Voynich Manuscript?"

Second panel. Calvin's dad, exasperated: "No! No Voynich Manuscript tonight!"

Calvin: "I want the Voynich Manuscript !"

Third panel. Calvin's sad: "Look, you know how the story goes! You've memorized the whole thing! It's completely unreadable!"

Calvin: "I want mysterious glyphs and symbols!"

Fourth panel. Calvin: "Wow! The story was different thatvtime!"

I find it strangely beautiful and freeing that (even if just a few cases, and with a struggle) we've made it possible for peoples to be 'voluntarily isolated' & it is incredibly telling about the grossest side of humanity that there are others whose immediate instinct is to try to violate that right

So, not content with John Allen Chau forcing his obnoxious, law-breaking and likely disease-ridden self into the midst of the North Sentinelese and getting himself killed, now there is a movie making a saint of this man?

Colonizers gonna colonize, I suppose.
The poster for the movie Last Days showing the actor playing John Allen Chau looking beatifically up into the light while green ocean water swirls around him. The general effect is one of him as a saint. To the right of the poster, a North Sentinelese man rows himself in a boat. The text reads Based on a True Story, Last Days,

Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.
A post by Rebecca Johnson:
“I finally learned how to teach my guys to ID the passive voice. If you can insert "by zombies" after the verb, you have passive voice.”

A tumblr respond from mightymur:
“The final, brilliant word on passive voice.
"She was killed [by zombies.]"<--passive
"Zombies killed [by zombies] her." <-- active”

Me: I don't WANT dogshit on my sandwich!
Server: My manager measures my performance based on how many dogshit sandwiches I sell, so if you don't want one, this conversation is not interesting.

Greta Thunberg is obviously a heroic person by any measure, she is quite obviously the kind of person who any decent society would hope they see their reflection in. It is remarkable how cruelty is so common place that people will openly hate her, and in really vicious ways, with no shame.
