a lot of the cool new shit i’m finding in multiple areas of interest is not only made in china but designed in china, they are seriously innovating and really so good at taste & aesthetics, too. and western companies are just sitting on their asses for some reason

“You get this sense of a change, where China’s competitiveness has gone from being about government subsidies and low wages to a tremendous number of highly skilled, educated engineers who are innovating like mad.”
headline: western executives who visit China are coming back terrified

As above (or yesterday) this is a guy who can easily be goaded into spending more money and getting less for it than if he’d just been reasonable, normal, financially prudent. This is all public, it’s not anything that wasn’t reported at the time.

Journalistic malpractice all over 2016 and since.

More on Lucky Loser:

The history of this man’s deceit, corruption, and irrationality was never discreet. It was always out there, always major.

The NYT itself committed major journalistic malpractice in not assembling THEIR OWN archives into a precís of negligence, dereliction, fraud, and abuse.

Hey so

Do you have a "Windows 10" machine you didn't upgrade to Windows 11

You should open this page and follow the instructions BEFORE WEDNESDAY. There are no downsides I know of & it means you get security updates for one more year. It may cost $30, or may not.

yeah - I was impressed by the token-prediction as being as powerful as it is, but there's more going on than that and I don't really follow it any more.

There's a number of dinosaurs (and other fossil critters) who were lost in both world wars. Those aboard the Mount Temple provide an interesting example:

What's the weirdest real thing you've heard some person, place, or country "lost it in the war"?

Items, vehicles, landmarks?

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

addenda: this is also a great reason to buy physical books, not just ebooks. The annotations never work right on a small screen. They need the columns and the columns need the double facing spread page.

The entire field, from its macro history spanning centuries to how a student learns it, is:

Here's an intuitive definition. Oh my God what the fuck, how did that thing get in here. Ok here's a *new* definition.

Genuinely embarrassing that no senior leaders I interact with actually read anything (yes this also applies to Biden appointees). No one responds to emails, no one reads past two sentences, no one does anything. The rest of the Pentagon follows along.

The trouble of course is that if you go around saying "zero tolerance for naysayers", it doesn't save much because you still need a budget to distinguish them from "if-you-keep-taking-water-out-of-that-acquifer-you'll-get-sinkholes-sayers"

boost your user satisfaction and growth with this one weird trick (removing the shit everyone hates that you added for no reason)
r/SaaS
u/soasme
I deleted ALL AI features... and user growth went UP.

Everyone's busy adding Al to everything.
I did the same for indie10k.com but it didn't work.
I removed all of fancy Al stuff - Al coach, Al growth ideas, Al "personalized" advice - everything.
Guess what?
I see more registered users and higher retention.
That actually make me wonder why now i have one page with one button, without all that Al thingy, but it does better?
Here's my question:
Is Al feature actually helping SaaS grow?

Spookiest decoration at the "Zoo Goes Boo" event at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids? Giant model of parasitoid wasps hatching from cocoons affixed to their caterpillar host.
Large model of a green caterpillar, the back of which is covered by dozens of white cocoons. Wasps can be seen emerging from some of the cocoons.

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

“No Kings” is great , but we really don't get a functioning democracy back until we internalize, bone deep, the instinctive response to this and every other statement like it: “I don’t care what that rich guy thinks.”

Make it your morning affirmation. Say it ten times at the top of every hour.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.
