New levels of hell: just got an email from our local AYSO cancelling today’s youth soccer games because ICE is at the Home Depot across from the soccer fields at James Park in Evanston.

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

The Trump administration on Saturday scrambled to rescind layoffs of hundreds of CDC scientists who were mistakenly fired on Friday night in what appeared to be a substantial procedural lapse.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

Hey, sci-fi and fantasy folks, if you happen to know folks who are involved with various estates in the field, do tip them a hat about the Anthropic settlement. Agencies do not get $ out of the deal and may not remember to talk to estate clients. My agent was worrying about estates not being alerted

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

Would you like a little good news? The immigrant childrens detention center I've protested at myriad times (Also at its landlords house) has closed and will now be a project to house the unhoused.

As much as I'd love to take credit, it's apparently because SW Key no longer gets $$ from Trump. 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.

In college I interned for a semester at GLAAD & for another semester with a local singer songwriter, who taught me how to plan a tour and how to write a press release. Did she need me? No. Was I half asleep the whole time? Yes. Did I learn two skills that have held me in good stead ever since? Yes!

I feel the same way, I should add, when people say "I only use AI for the kind of stuff a stoned teenage intern might do for me." Give the stoned teenage intern a chance! Those are their starter jobs!

I didn't hear the beginning so maybe there was mitigating context, but I have rarely heard anything as awkward as that friend earnestly trying to figure out what was wrong as the non-person impersonating his friend drove the conversation in circles.
sarahpinsker.bsky.social
And the conversation he recorded with a friend of thirty years was equally awful. The friend could clearly tell something was wrong with him, and was genuinely concerned. Dude didn't even listen to the conversation in real time, so he didn't get to interrupt and explain.

The piece ended with a clone of the author chatting with a clone of the author's father, both programs talking past each other. The tone was meant to be poignant but it was absolutely horrifying to me.

We stand ready to support their return home so they are best positioned for helping Texans respond to any natural disasters.
Abbott activates emergency resources ahead of growing wildfire threat, flood risk in Texas
With expected growing wildfire danger across Texas and the potential for a flood risk this weekend, Gov. Greg Abbott is activating more state emergency response resources Friday.

On the way home from the barn I heard a This American Life piece by a guy who had an AI clone of himself call his friends to have conversations and I would just like to state now that if anyone ever does this to me, we will no longer be friends. WTF is this world where we outsource all interaction?
