Every single journalist with expertise in extremism I know has been fired or their publication has folded.
Not a coincidence, of course. Grateful for their work, but unfortunately for almost all of us, this work will now have to be the side hustle.

dissatisfied by the New York Times coverage of Zohran Mamdani?
great news! I talked to the guy Thursday about his campaign’s success at bringing community together beyond this election, and contextualized how it’s potentially shifted youth engagement with politics by simply listening @teenvogue.com

Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”

I was losing SNAP anyway because of the work requirements, and the incredibly short-notice cancellation of the extensions. I used the remainder of my account to stockpile frozen and shelf-stable foods. A close friend who still qualifies did the same, because nobody expects to get any refills again.

Still haven’t seen a video of neighbors cheering an abduction, still haven’t seen reports of a neighbor pointing out a hiding migrant to ICE/Border Patrol
The only people praising the ICE/Border Patrol terror patrols & kidnappings are people who live nowhere near where they’re happening.

The “value of human life” has been devalued so many times in my life.
Used to make movies about dozens of highly trained dudes dying to save an “innocent life,” that made millions of dollars and won Oscars. Moral unanimity.
Now it’s “not cost effective” to offer life-saving care.
This ends badly

I think it helps to think of Fascism as the only possible endpoint for capitalism that’s allowed to regulate itself. All the incentives lead to systematic brutality.

Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

Comparing the relation between the presidential election results in 2020 and 2024 with the post-election commentary is a fascinating exercise.

Trump 74,223,975 popular votes 46.8%
2024
Trump 77,302,580 49.8%
Harris 75,017,613. 48.3%
