Hello kids. Great costumes. You can have boring regular candy or, in exchange for a small fee, you can invest in something I'm calling Candy Premium, an AI-enabled solution that

"Trickle-down economics" is basically "let the dragons add your gold to their hoard, because they're bound to let some of it go eventually. Right?"

Though I can't say I recall too many stories where the dragons voluntarily gives up their hoard...

It's #wipWednesday! I managed to finish some Death Riders over the past weekend. Just have four more of these to paint and then I can work on shading and decals.

Sorry for anyone losing their job at Amazon, but am heartened by this

"We underestimated the power of existing user habits"

It doesn't matter how much money you have or how big a brand you are if customers don't want what you're selling

Amazing lesson in doing your research first
I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.

We keep seeing startups who want to replace something valuable (therapy, counseling, tutoring, artistic expression) with some tech bullshit under the banner of democratization. But why do we need to invest so much in bad tech that doesn't work instead of just giving people access to what they need?

You want to democratize "going to therapy"? Make it "free" as in paid by socialized healthcare. You want to democratize "making art"? Give people money and free time to express themselves.

It is hard to overstate the stress produced by the incoherence of academic institutions pumping generative AI when they want to play business and then leaving instructors to deal with the results when they want to play school
Cheating with an LLM is the easiest thing in the world for a student to do, but it creates a massive, laborious headache for a prof, if you intend to take it seriously. There’s meetings, emails, discussions, moral dilemmas. It’s just incredibly burdensome, on top of everything else right now.
I had 9 meetings about students using Chat GPT/LLMs on their papers today.

If you want to know why professors burn out, ask anyone trying to teach critical thinking and writing skills to Freshmen....

Kiddo, like many toddlers, used a dummy. We weren't dead keen on it but it helped her soothe so 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, eventually she got to an age where it felt okay to encourage her, gently, to give it up.

It was about the age she started losing some of her milk teeth.

The tooth fairy once wrote to me IN ELVISH (or at least in runes) ON A LEAF! I was a lot more impressed by this as an adult than I was as a child. I wish I still had that leaf.
As Terry Pratchett said, we tell little lies to children so that they can accept the big lies they need to swallow to survive.

Justice. Mercy. Duty. That sort of thing.

I like to think your dad would have approved of the Dummy Elephant, @rhi.bsky.social .

I’ve set up a recurring donation with mine. Even $5 a month can help a lot—usually way more than we, who don’t buy in bulk, could buy in equivalent.
Feeding America has a page where you can input your zip code and it'll show you all of the food banks near you overlaid on a map. If you need it, it's there. If you don't need it, think about donating money if you have it and your time if you don't.

The Trump admin’s USDA issued new guidance stating it will not use existing funds to cover SNAP benefits if the government shutdown extends beyond October 31. This move effectively threatens to withhold billions of dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) contingency funding

I got this ad on Reddit for AI slop that starts funny purely because the bandage doesn't cover his ear and a human needed to look through their promo images and pick one, but I digress.

The hook here is *actual physical objects*!

“oh so you think the east wing being demolished is worse than-“ it’s a synecdoche, man. a visual metaphor. there’s a reason the aliens in Independence Day don’t aim a huge laser at SNAP benefits

On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer
