“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

NEW: Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Archbishop of Chicago, has issued a new statement declaring that Chicago "communities are shaken by immigration raids and detentions. These actions wound the soul of our city. Let me be clear. The Church stands with migrants."

Up until a few weeks ago I thought of the Speaker of the House as absurd sycophantic replaceable muppet, just another cog in the MAGA machine, but have to agree with @atrupar.com here: the more I see of him during the shutdown the more I see an absolute sociopath.
I am completely awestruck by the ease with which Mike Johnson lies on a daily basis. I'll never understand how such a transparently fraudulent "man of faith" can live with themselves. Life is too short to be that phony.
I expect a lightning bolt to hit him mid-lie at some point

Trump is a fascist.
But you do not live in a fascist state.

Some people find this difference very hard to parse, so in those cases, I assume that yes, I have the sober, factual, accurate view.
Your overall message is confusing. You point at others who assess we are under fascist rule as alarmist overreacters, then you claim you have called trump a fascist for years, then you will parse other's arguments so that only you,Tom, have the sober, factual, accurate view of things
I called Trump a fascist years ago

People act as if the Dems are hobbled by media access or money. Neither is true. Yes the msm is coerupt and the right has more money. But these aren’t good excuses for why Democrats just don’t fight. They make an active choice to just not fight. Every day.

I know we say this all the time so it’s become cliche, but can you imagine the hysteria that would be happening right now with Republicans if Obama did the exact same thing to the inside and outside of the WH that Trump is doing? It would be 24/7 on Fox for months. We all know why.

All this cruelty and ugliness because these fuckers couldn't accept a country that elected a black president.
I’m surprised he’s not struck by lightning every time he lies like this.

We couldn't find anyone among the 7 million+ No Kings attendees who says they were paid to protest. But X user @crypto4u1488 says each attendee was paid $750 by George Soros and bused in from other states. The truth may lie somewhere in between.

Every time a Democrat says something that could plausibly be construed as insulting Republican voters it is played endlessly by Corporate Media (deplorable, guns & religion, etc: you remember them decades later)

Trump literally shits on Democratic voters and Corporate Media refuses to discus it
I optimistically thought the media might focus today on how yesterday utterly refuted the claims numerous Republicans repeated last week about protests funded by shadowy donors & carried out by radical, violent, pro-Hamas, America-hating radical leftists. But no. Let’s move on, nothing to see here.
Look at the current digital home page. Not a word about the protests. It’s such an abdication of journalistic responsibility.

as far as just messaging goes that video is probably the most embarrassing thing any president has done on the world stage in my life

and the fact that the sunday shows wont even describe it? total abdication of their responsibility
There is currently nothing about the protests on the NYT digital front page. Nothing! Topics more important than 7 million Americans peacefully protesting against an authoritarian president include George Santos and a theft at the Louvre.

So disappointing, but at this point not surprising.

it is far better to be in a country with a mass visible protest movement than one without it
Today’s peaceful protests were the perfect example of what @radiofreetom.bsky.social has repeated ad nauseum (only to receive ad hominem attacks):

We are not yet living under fascism.

Many of our current leaders are fascists. But they don’t control us yet and we need to make sure they never do.

I don’t follow baseball as closely as I used to, but the single greatest game in a sport played since the 1800s is worth acknowledging. Holy cow.

Ohtani isn’t just a world class athlete, he’s historically great.

Also neat to think about how it would’ve been front page news in the 20th century.

I’ve got a nervous energy in anticipation of No Kings protests, an excitement I haven’t felt with these things before.

They’ll be big. The regime has taken notice and broken out its go-to move: blatantly lying. Media will cover it more.

This won’t be the end, of course, but something is happening.

It must really make everyone working at US Attorneys Offices around the country and DOJ, from prosecutors to staff, proud to know that you serve under an admin that has wiped out the convictions and/or sentences of every Republican convicted of a crime over the last decade.
