But there’s always those ugly thoughts. The things you would’n’t give voice to in a confrontational way, like “ why did you alter her ears? She was only 13 and you had her carved to please you”. Nope. Perhaps she thought she was helping my child be more beautiful but she was already perfect.

As hard as it is acknowledge, my daughter was raised well. Good education and homes. She’s traveled internationally. I don’t even own a passport. So she definitely started out her life with many advantages. More than we could have offered.

When the two tries at IVF failed for me, my husband and I became foster parents in 2002. Then later adopting a sibling group of three by 2006. To suddenly have her enter the family at that point would have been life altering, to say the least.

Think about it. What if the other mother reached out sooner and thought to unite while my biological daughter was a minor? That would have been disruptive and perhaps even negatively affecting her childhood.

A question that goes through my mind is at what point did you realize that child was wholly unlike you? In the first letter from 2023, she attributed the differences due to the donor sperm. I can’t help but think she realized far sooner. I don’t expect an honest answer.

They have a Christmas tradition that a family portrait gets sent with a card. I was sent one in ‘23, ‘24 and it’s so obvious that one child did not come from their genes. Like a pinecone on a palm tree.

I mean, she’s an adult. We’re not blending families at holidays. My daughter knows little of her bloodline‘s traditions. She returns to the couple who raised her and celebrates their way. These little things sting.
