I've started doing something similar for fun. In this paper with a vector image I embedding a picture of my son with a balloon. It's faint but if you zoom in you can see it (you have to download the PDF). It's open access though.

I really want to stress the extent to which, in 1992, *no one accepted the idea O'Connor did this for a reason*. Any reason! She was generally assumed to be "crazy". The line is "well in 1992, no one knew". Yet somehow, at the time all us nine-year-olds knew "jokes" about what happened to altar boys
What I'm listening to today: "War"

Sinead O'Connor covering Bob Marley, stripped down, sharpened, into something like a weapon. This ran live on TV and all anyone talked about was the career-ending final seconds. No one understood why she did it. Child abuse? Absurd

@ericswalwell.bsky.social constituent here in Castro Valley. This is exactly what I want to hear.
Swalwell to @gregsargent.bsky.social: "I’m not voting to fund this ICE. I support getting rid of their immunity. I support requiring them to take off the masks ... This ICE is not what anybody asked for, and I’m not going to vote to continue it."

He closed the replies but I really want to know where they would get the control's to do an analysis like this. You'd need folks who both have and have not had a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection.
I have no interest in trying to dunk on anyone but there is absolutely no evidence for this at all.

SARS-CoV-2 has not been demonstrated to make you more susceptible to other infections by impairing the function of your immune system.

This is the result of both sides journalism. They are simply transcribers of what people say. If one side says nothing, then there is nothing to transcribe, so nothing was said. Folks like Anthony are incapable of gathering information, digesting it, and synthesizing an analysis from facts.
These are amazing exchanges. A Times reporter hypes Trump’s deranged NYT interview by complaining about the access they got from Joe Biden and then when faced with what he’s admitting, he pretends he’s not saying what he’s saying.

Access journalism is cancer. Reporters shouldn’t be groupies.

I'm not a Jeopardy fan or an opponent. I'm Jeopardy-neutral. So I come to Ken with no real preconceived notions. But based on his skeets, I'm really liking this guy.
This kind of thing does point out a real ethical dilemma: block or mute?

Like those before it, that insane, vile DHS statement about the Minneapolis shooting isn't about covering anything up. It's performative lying.

They aren't trying to persuade anyone that their agents did nothing wrong. They're trying to project that their agents can get away with anything.

I was an obese PhD applicant. I was obese during my PhD. I had no trouble getting my dissertation done. I'd work 50-60 hr/wk in grad school, no problem. Did I want to weight? Sure.
"It would say that we know what type of person you are looking for, and the people you are looking for would be a match for you if you lost 15 pounds. So do with that information what you will.”

Fortunately they hired a scientific advisor with extensive experience in delivering this kind of news.

I've watched thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot as part of NPR's reporting and archive project on that day.

Here are some of the lesser known videos that have really stuck with me.

I do use blocklists, and I’d use this list as well.
I don’t use blocklists but if someone would make one listing every pointless shitbird who piled on Parker Malloy and made her leave, I would subscribe.

Just to put this in the proper context: You need a Starlink terminal to access Starlink. So only folks with the terminal will be able to utilize this. The terminals cost about $350 right now, and say it takes a couple of weeks for delivery, you see how this is an empty offer.
Starlink says it will provide service to people of Venezuela through Feb. 3 SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Starlink, the company’s satellite internet provider, will provide the service free of charge to the people of Venezuela for the next month.

Yep. LLMs can be productivity-enhancing in various domains, but so far, if the goal is to produce well educated humans, they ironically undermine our ability to be as productive as we were as educators. You need more faculty to produce the same outcomes. Now, if your goal is generating diplomas...
I think a fundamental problem in 2026 is the good solutions require smaller first year classes where we can create new assessment methods (oral presentations, digital research projects, etc). LLMs break the assignments that worked OK with big groups. But no one is investing in hiring professors.

I really loved blogs. After school I was a volunteer for two years. I would connect my computer to the internet, refresh my rss feed of blogs and then read them at night creating bookmarks of things I needed to read the next time I connected to the internet.
This post by JA Westenberg is so good. And it's forcing me to look again at my own site, PressThink.

"The Case for Blogging in the Ruins." www.joanwestenberg.com/the-case-for...

"Most blogs are abandoned after three posts," she writes. The ones that persist have these things in common:

Formed in November 1971 by the 3 Hackney brothers, they were influential pioneers of the genre and, along with Pure Hell, the first all-black proto-punk/punk band.

Ten years ago I would not have known the majority of the words in this paragraph—and was indubitably far better off for it.

By retreating only to "kitchen table issues" to avoid being labeled "woke," Democratic leaders have left an open goal for the GOP. When you treat the harassment of vulnerable communities as a "distraction" rather than a crisis, you're not avoiding a fight: you're just forfeiting it.
