And, for that matter, "ramping up deportations" by, say, hiring more immigration judges to process asylum claims faster (the bipartisan bill) is not the same as "ramping up deportations" by grabbing everyone you see and deporting them. You've done a ton of work to classify these as the same thing.

The difference between a policy of, say, deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, and deporting all undocumented immigrants, is not in fact just "ramping up what was happening." It is different in fundamental substance.

It's not quite the pro-crime caucus of the fox news imagination but there was definitely an anti-anti-crime caucus that reached critical mass during the heady years which really needs to stay in the past where it belongs.

It is utterly deranged to claim that this Biden policy, which separated several hundred children in a year - let's say that's not great - is meaningfully the same as Trump's policy which separates thousands every year, which doesn't include children simply deported.

It was "easier to ignore" because there were less beatings, murders, disappearances, family separations, revocations of existing legal status, and immigrants and minorities who are living in daily fear, just like how antisemitism became harder to ignore in the 30s.

It is true that Trump did not invent the American immigration system out of whole cloth. It is also true that he represents a significant and major break from what came before, which was an immigration policy resembling that of most modern states, and is now an engine of ethnic cleansing.

My argument is that Trump has done significantly more harm than most Democrats, which is agreed on by pretty much every immigrant activist organization, almost every immigrant, most leftists, and about 99% of Bluesky sans you.
