“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

I feel much safer today knowing that we deported a Babson College student back to a country where she hasn't lived since childhood.

She wasn't even flying internationally. She was flying to Texas.

Any Lucia Lopez Belloza was at Logan to catch a flight to Texas when immigration authorities detained her as she was about to board the plane.

You talking about my books, or the books of any author you love, goes exponentially further than that author talking about their own books, especially on social media where your posts can go viral

I mean. Remember Bigolas Dickolas?
FWIW: Mention books you like or you think others might like. You never know what'll happen:

I saw The Sad Bastard Cookbook here so I mentioned it on Masto (in a "in case you need this" sense). It kinda went viral (1K shares). It jumped to a high ranking on Amazon and then they got media attention.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

As an author, I don't make a whole lot of money, but at the same time I need to read a lot of books to stay aware of trends and support my fellow authors. Obviously if I spend all my profits on other people's books, I'm not coming out ahead!

So: ways to read lots of indie books for cheap.

Lay awake in bed from 6 to 6:30 and suddenly managed to solve most of the problems I’ve been hammering out in Droplet Book 2. Connections fell into place! Character arcs solidified! I am ecstatic!!

I have a similar experience driving, listening to my playlist of songs I specifically selected because they’re great for driving
I love listening to my own writing playlist and thinking "this slaps, who made this?"

Is there a word for when the music of a song in a musical contradicts the words? Like in No One Mourns the Wicked, or in Penzance where the pirates bellow, “With catlike tread, upon our prey we steal!”

This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

I feel like the last couple decades of "is representation good or not?" discourse missed more important questions of "how fragile is representation?", "what do we do when multiple industries eliminate it as an intentional move against us?" and "how can we sustain queer artists when shit goes south?"

I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

Not to be a broken record or anything but it’d be just aces if literally anyone with the authority did something about the unyieldingly apocalyptic damage these soulless pieces of shit are doing on a daily basis seeing that it’s already going to take decades to even begin repairing.
BREAKING: The Trump administration says it will transfer many of the Department of Education’s programs to other agencies, effectively attempting to dismantle much of the department.

This is an attempt to get around the law, which states that only Congress can unilaterally eliminate the DOE.

It’s useful for people of my generation to be reminded that this wasn’t that long ago. Ruby Bridges isn’t just still alive—she’s only 71, not ancient!
65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

Those claiming Dems should retreat on racial justice aren't hard-headed realists, they're pushing against the electoral tide rather than leaning into it. The story of Gen Z isn't about racist backlash or red-pilled young men. It's the most racially progressive generation in American history. 🧵
