To the extent my country is exceptional it is because we are a country of all people and none. The world made manifest. A nation of nations. A people united in truly radical ideas of freedom, equality, and justice for all. Any attempt to undo this is treason and also seeks to make us ordinary.

Really seems like a thing that a consortium of blue states could set up in exile, maybe with corporate donation help.

There is something reassuringly wholesome about contraptions in this era of data centres and AI slop.

Riding a bike is one of the few
activities left to modern man that gives the experience of operating a contraption, rather than a gadget or a

In fairness to the hogs, I’d be pretty hyped too if I was a Canadian swine and heard there was an entire country down south ran by pigs.

Fingers crossed we never have to deal with the US hog/Canadian hog mix:

When the Kadoories relocated to Hong Kong from Shanghai in 1949, one of their big projects was the Agricultural Aid Association, which worked with small farmers in the New Territories to improve their yields and livelihoods. One of their initiatives was importing new strains of Australian pigs.

China raises so many pigs that pork is the #1 meat worldwide even though like a quarter of people are religiously prohibited from eating it

Trump: "Portland, I mean -- every time I look at that place it's burning down. There are fires all over the place. When a store -- there are very few of them left -- but when a store owner rebuilds a store they build it out of plywood. They don't put up storefronts anymore. They just put wood up."

It's funny because even my most libertarian friends will agree that monitoring infectious disease outbreaks is one of the few things you need a government for and can't really privatize, and these guys just want to burn it all down, anyway.

This is the correct take, by the way. Why I have come around to some form of a wealth tax is not because I fantasise that it can pay for the government programs I want (it won’t) or moral disgust at wealth (don’t care), but because of very rich people using their money to warp the body politic
opinionhaver.bsky.social
Lot of people confidently missing the point in the replies to this: if every cent of Elon musks net wealth was liquid, which it isn’t, that’s not even enough money to run the govt for two weeks. The problem less that they have money, and more how they use that money in destabilizing ways.

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

one sort of interesting contradiction here is that a lot of this policy/political goal could be accomplished with progressive taxation on political spending specifically, and not caring if they spent the money on a yacht. But that runs into 1A issues, while just taking it away doesn’t.

On the one hand this would be good because anything that breaks the power of MAGA and its gestalt Evangelical Christian religious wing is good. On the other, how well will the liberal Christians play with non-Christians? I did not become an apostate to be dragged back to the Church by "liberals."

one interesting thing about the elite capitulation to trump is that it started to happen long before he actually became president. like around when chris rufo became the new york times' assignment editor, in 2022.

i don't think there's any way to productively use them. "win a majority and appoint judges who will mulch those powers immediately" is, i think, the ideal outcome.
