To the extent my country is exceptional it is because we are a country of all people and none. The world made manifest. A nation of nations. A people united in truly radical ideas of freedom, equality, and justice for all. Any attempt to undo this is treason and also seeks to make us ordinary.

this genuinely is socialism in miniature. the idea is good, but it all depends on competent execution
Turns out Mamdani's controversial proposal for government-run supermarkets isn't so novel. Other cities also are toying with the idea to bring fresh, affordable food to communities that do not have easy access to it. Good WSJ read (gift link)

The goal is for the store to become profitable without any government subsidy within three years.

this is obviously intended to chill dissent but i think it's going to backfire on them. what the lawmakers said was just directly true. and trying to get them for it is just going to raise their profile and the salience of what they said!
MS NOW confirms: The FBI is working with Capitol Police to schedule interviews with the six Democratic lawmakers who urged service members to refuse to comply with illegal orders.

seeing a lot of this kind of claim but did you know that hippos actually kill more people every year than Isaac Chotiner?
Amazing to learn that Isaac Chotiner can apparently just come for you in your replies. Like suddenly realizing you're swimming in open ocean

Yeah the social harms of AI, imo, are so grave and grand it justifies the complete and total abolition of the technology, or failing that, great restrictions on its use. The pogroms it could cause are much more immediate threat than electricity usage on increasingly green grids.
a) The social harms of AI are vastly under-appreciated and go far beyond displacement of labor

b) The environmental harms of AI, though not trivial, are nevertheless small potatoes compared to many other industries like farming (and AI demand may even help accelerate electrical grid upgrades)

a lot of falsehoods are getting repeated about b) by people who rightly believe a), and it doesn't help credibility.

ICYMI: One of the most interesting things about sci-fi is that ideas like a space elevator or an O'Neil cylinder can "exist" as discrete, almost Platonic concepts without ever taking on physical manifestation.

The folks at Heat Death very kindly gave me space to talk about the implications of that.

As someone who first watched "best of simpsons" clips on you tube before watching the actual show it is astounding how if you watch enough you've seen entire episodes of classic Simpsons just out of order. Every scene is someone's favorite.
I feel like it is culturally important to note that I recently played an old episode of the Simpsons on Disney+ for some kids and then a random newer episode and the kids, unprompted, were like “how come this isn’t as funny?” so it’s not just nostalgia we are correct

an underrated part of the British crisis is that the justice system is under massive strain, not least because criminal barristers are often being paid *less for taking a case than their costs in doing so.*.
