A big update: Now that I’ve got some freelance contracts going again, I’m very much Open for Business! If you need a writer for a gaming feature, a pop-culture interview, a mock review or other games-industry consulting gig, a Star Wars expert or Fallout S2 recapper, my email is [email protected].
Some print work from my previous freelance days: an issue of PC Gamer with Cyberpunk on the cover, my book on the making of BioWare, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, an issue of Edge magazine, Fangoria issue number 2 (which contains my oral history of Friday the 13th: The Game), and Den of Geek.

Feels good to write again. I enjoyed my time with Battlefield 6, and I hope you do too! 🎖🎖🎖

Battlefield 6 hits the ground running with a multiplayer suite full of dazzling sandboxes just waiting to be leveled, but not every part of the package is as effective.

Will probably be my first action figure in ages. Probably since the Kenobi show was coming out? I should see if they ever released a Black Series Stranger while I'm at it...

Collectors! Store owners! Hoarders! Help us out! @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social is looking to source copies of this 1985 NES pack-in poster for fundraising reasons, and we need them asap. We already cleaned out eBay. Note that they need to be the ones that say copyright 1985, as pictured! Can pay!

My next book will be a biography of Jack Nicholson, written as an epic story of the transformation of the movie industry and modern masculinity from the 1950s to the present, with Nicholson as the main character. The title: Leading Man.
New York Times bestselling author and film & TV critic at New York Magazine Matt Zoller Seitz's LEADING MAN, the definitive biography of Jack Nicholson, casting Nicholson as the complex main character in an era of American culture spanning six decades, while shining a light on the actor’s crucial role in shaping modern masculinity, both on and off the screen, based on new interviews and original reporting, to Amar Deol at Grand Central, in an exclusive submission, by Ethan Bassoff at WME.

Was a big fan of the ambiguity in this, and I suspect that's why it's stood the test of time, or come back around as a classic, the way it has. Probably influenced Honeymoon (2014) and Garland's take on Annihilation, but it's also just a massive layer cake of nightmare images and meaning. Phenomenal

Some exciting news: 404 Media just won a grant via Muckrock to investigate book bans and educational censorship in the U.S. The plan is to file hundreds of public records requests around the country and to report on and archive all the documents for public use:

First one I thought of, anyway:

Yeah, the AI “actress,” George, and Jason Blum all happening in the span of a week reeks of desperation
alexjkane.itch.io
Yep. People crack jokes about YouTube, streamers, podcasters, or newsletters, but that for-the-love style of coverage is where you get genuine editorial freedom now.
ethangach.bsky.social
You can still do that but it's all driven by charity, personal passion and it won't impact anyone's bottom line even thought it obviously is important as people to see work we poured years into be taken seriously and engaged with deeply.

anyway did y'all know that every single week for years gamesradar+ has explicitly taken the time to write thoughtful feature coverage of indie games? it's true!

8. What TV show defined your childhood?

I wonder if that mindset extends to LGBT+ movies? It's hard to wrap my head around. People just used to watch stuff like 40-Year-Old Virgin and laugh at it; I mostly hear about this mentality through social media
alexjkane.itch.io
Yeah, I think anything sex-related is gonna cause an outrage somewhere; it just isn't as "understood," maybe, as with film/TV sex scenes. People are so weird about sex scenes now — I used to watch American Pie 2 with my grandfather 20+ years ago lol

Fortunately, newsletters and podcasts have the freedom that interesting pubs like Kill Screen or Waypoint *used* to have.

This comes from upper mgmt's total obsession with data: if you spend time on anything that's not a "sure thing," you're wasting valuable resources, in their eyes. You can be writing about a Star Wars game or the biggest indie of the month — someone'll still say "Why aren't you covering CoD/Pokémon?"
alexjkane.itch.io
I don't know whether this true, but I can definitely say that, in my pre-journalism/editorial life, the first time I heard "Fack" by Eminem was... in my boss's office, at a bank lol

Interesting the "there's too much unnecessary sex in movies and TV" never carries over to music. Never see anyone complaining about Taylor Sabrina and Chappell singing about fucking too often

the state of games press now is that there are fewer working writers than ever, and their attentions are often occupied weeks or months in advance thanks to release calendars overstuffed by the ~20,000 Steam games launching each year.
mikerose.bsky.social
We've been around for ages now, and we have means for getting our games out there into the word without the press

But new teams, teams smaller than ours, teams without the means -- are they just fucked?

Is this really the state of the games press now -- if it ain't AAA, go fuck yourself?
