Old mutuals from Twitter - say hello or I might miss that you're (finally!) here :)
New folks - until I get around to writing a new bio/intro thread, be aware that I block for casteism, racism and transphobia liberally, and that I support Kashmir's struggle for freedom as much as I do Palestine's.

Every literary festival or theatre should condemn this, but as Sonia says, they won’t. They will cowardly disguise themselves by saying it’s “politics” and that they aren’t “political”. The storming of the National Theatre of Palestine is a crime not only on Palestinians, but on Palestinian art.
I can’t wait for PEN to comment on the Israeli intelligence forces storming the Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem and threatening the whole cast of the children’s performance and the audience if they didn’t leave in five minutes.

Because they won’t.

Everyone should read how sweeping the ability of the US is to exile a person from digital life.
“All his accounts with US companies such as Amazon, Airbnb, or PayPal were immediately closed by the providers. Online bookings, such as through Expedia, are immediately canceled, even if they concern hotels in France.”
How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
Nicolas Guillou has been sanctioned by the USA as a judge of the International Criminal Court. He notices the effects primarily in the digital realm.

Just heard from an old friend about another famous religious leader who's a serial sexual harasser. And whose victims are never going to report him to the police. The amount of abusers this society tolerates is staggering.

A hot spot for this stuff is Cambodia where refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh are often trafficked and held under violent conditions and used to monetise platforms like x or to perpetrate online fraud. In July y 2025 1000 people were arrested there at “cyber scam compounds”.

There is a whole underworld of exploited workers who make up the foundation of digital tech. We talk about content moderators, but content farms are also very exploitative industries where moderately educated people with reasonable English skills in the global majority are used to push content.
It may be hard to believe, but Twitter was once a useful public space instead of a weird monetization scheme for racist ragebait chatbots.

This great thread makes a point I've been trying to convey for years. Calling all data-driven prediction or decision software "AI" is a huge gift to LLM hypemen, who want people to believe, incorrectly, that LLM data centers are crucial for solar forecasting or operating buildings and power grids.
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Alice is the gold standard of what Twitter was when it was great - how you could just find these brilliant, remarkable people with the kind of voices that rarely get platformed or taken seriously, and hear about their lives in their own words without intruding on them or demanding emotional labor
Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?
