Yep, I've got a History degree and the lessons from it are far less predictive of what will happen in contemporary society than Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory, which are like that sports almanac in Back to the Future II.
kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

You couldn't publish this today. You'd have to cloak it under several layers of metaphor.

Well, Happy New Year, folks. Here's hoping 2026 is as awesome as 2025 wasn't. Don't let the bastards grind you down, carpe all the diem, don't be a dick, & do whatever you can to put more love & goodness into the world & reduce the jackassery in it.

The smell of hospitals in winter, and the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls... ❤️

Wanted to watch the #CBC New Year's coverage, but #Gem isn't working (& it isn't just me, according to Down Detector). I don't use cable or streaming services, there's only a couple of times a year when I can even be bothered with TV. This is one of them, of course. Oh well.

If you can stomach watching it, it's out there. And if this link fails, there's others. Many, many, many others.
Trump state media have issued a takedown notice against Global News for airing the 60 Minutes piece on the treatment of people deported to El Salvador.
Here is the video. It is a brutal documentary.
Please share.

Reading Relentless Decency by @todmaffin.com & had to share this gem, which is in some respects relevant to the thread I posted earlier:

Innovation, Canadian-style, doesn’t start in boardrooms. It starts when something’s broken, it’s minus thirty, and we mutter, “Fuck it, I’ll fix it myself.”

They didn't stand a chance in a lot of ridings given the perceived stakes. In Hamilton Centre, Matthew Green should've won even against the Lib onslaught, but the vote split b/c the NDP platform is no longer distinguishable from the Libs, & b/c they've never formed a fed govt so seem powerless.
NDP report on a disastrous loss:
"The overall verdict from campaign staff was that even significantly better decisions would not have changed the overall outcome."
The campaign "fell a little short."
The base is "defeatist"
I served my party for 21 years. I call bullshit.

By January Jim Beam had fell

And the bells were ringing"

The last 25 years — and the next century — would have looked very different if democracy had run its course. It enrages me that in a country which (used to) preach the virtues of democracy, the votes were simply not counted, and the legal system okayed this.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.
