Now me, I'm always fully stocked up on fog machine fluid, fake blood and sexy pirate wench costumes, but I understand that not everyone has my homemaking skills, so you might need to place an emergency delivery this month.

I don't know who needs to hear this but on Instacart you can get 1 hour delivery from Spirit Halloween.

RIP actor & Chicago native Ron Dean.

He interrogated Dr. Richard Kimble in THE FUGITIVE, he dropped Andy off at detention in THE BREAKFAST CLUB, he was shot by Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT, he was Marty Crane's poker buddy on FRASIER, and so much more.

Morris Kantor, Haunted House, 1930, oil on canvas,
94.3 × 84.5 cm (37 1/8 × 33 1/4 in.), Art Institute of Chicago
"Morris Kantor drew inspiration from the material culture of historical New England—ladder-back chairs, colonial portraiture, marine painting, wallpaper—in this fantastical rendering of a supposedly haunted house in rural Massachusetts. A shadowy figure lurks at the composition’s darkened right edge, an unknown presence encroaching on the comforts of the sitting room. Kantor later recalled that such a setting, with “its peculiar moldy smell, the fading beauty of old plaster discolored by time and living … turned my imagination to the past, to the people who had lived there and gone.” A Russian immigrant, the artist engaged with the stories and objects of American history as catalysts for his Surrealist, dreamlike musings." -AIC

I’m sure it’s a fine movie, but there’s no way you’re getting me to watch a horror movie with a main character who is a dog who is constantly in peril. I almost walked out of the theater in the middle of ANATOMY OF A FALL (this is not a joke). I cannot do it. You cannot make me.

I like it because it works either way as a log costume or the cat's own Log Lady costume.

Seconded, "unglamorous and disturbing" is the perfect description for that film and I find it far more compelling.

the reviews are out and it seems like the new Ed Gein series is real bad, so I feel duty bound to recommend 1974’s DERANGED instead. It’s as close to a Gein biopic as we’ve ever gotten, it is unglamorous and disturbing, and it is a fine film tbh

Ordered a pair of glasses for a Log Lady Halloween costume so I'm locked in now. I originally wanted to dress up my cat as the log but so far my attempts to find a log pet costume have proved fruitless (please do not suggest that I make one, I assure you that will not happen).

Watching MAC AND ME in 4K because it proves God doesn’t exist. It’s an affront to God so heinous that he literally can’t exist if it is real. God isn’t dead, death presumes life. We are the result of infinite possibilities not grand design. Death is not celebrated because we are afraid of our truth.

Heading home from São Paulo tonight and a few hours after I land at O’Hare I’m planning to get to the Music Box for WAKE IN FRIGHT, what better state than delirious from an overnight, cross-hemisphere flight in which to watch a hallucinatory descent into Australian madness, love this plan for me.

We laugh about Carpenter being in his weed and video games era (and good for him) but there are very good reasons he might have gotten sick of the industry. It screwed him over repeatedly and even though he eventually got his genre flowers, he is still obscenely underrated as a serious filmmaker.

Just thinking about how THE THING came within shouting distance of ending John Carpenter's career.

1. I love this film.
2. I love the Criterion edition of it, which is gorgeous.
3. The Criterion edition also has a doc of the 1989 cast/crew reunion, where director Herk Harvey (pictured) speaks on a panel in full ghoul makeup alongside the rest of the cast who look totally normal and it's terrific.

Hey, guys, bad news. Just been to the void and it's closed to any new screams. Apparently it's overflowing so we've gotta find somewhere else to unburden ourselves into the ether. I might try the abyss next, but I hear if you scream long enough, it'll start screaming back, which, y'know, fair.

As far as I know, the only Chicago movie that features, however briefly, shots of Carol's Pub, the Philadelphia Church "Jesus Saves" sign, and the 22 Clark Street bus. Northside icons, all of them.
