Just to put a number on it: about 1M jobs were created in 2024. About 605K were full time, 340 part time (everything rounded)
From Jan to November this year: just over 370K jobs were created
About 130K were full time, just over 140K were part time
Yes, lower unemployment, more jobs. But not good.

She got advice from her mother, and that advice shaped the rest of her life. Now more than ever, we need to hear that advice: "Just keep going."

A few years ago, Bill Nye the science guy debated creationist Ken Ham about evolution. The last question was "what would change your mind?"

Bill Nye said "Evidence."

Ken Ham said "Nothing can possibly change my mind about this."

I think about that a lot.

Another labour market surprise (and another great Labour Force Survey summary from StatCan www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quo...):

Canada's unemployment rate surprises everyone by moving DOWN to 6.5%, driven by a rise in part-time jobs and more youth getting jobs.

A 🧵on what's driving the story.

I know we all find Truss amusing, but I find it deeply concerning that you've got an actual former Prime Minister even saying this stuff.

Labour MPs attempting to use social media to pander to racism by constantly trying to find the perfect language to avoid being accused of overt racism, "apologising" when they miss, and then trying again, should be spat on in the street. In a purely notional sense, of course.

[shamelessly both promoting Dorian's point and adding my own]

Farage has always been very good at doing sort of golf club racism. He has an instinctive grasp on what codes to use and how much he can say before people recoil that his heirs and imitators lack. (...more)
It's revealing about taboos around racism that the visceral bullying racism of schoolboy Farage cuts through while the much more consequential thinly veiled racism of adult Farage doesn't. Many people need that veil and flinch when it's removed. You can advocate racist policies but not say the words

The fact that four hostile drones tried to hit Zelenskyy’s plane & it’s barely a blip in the news cycle should terrify everyone. We’ve been dragged so deep into the chaos era that an attempted strike on a world leader doesn’t even break through. When this becomes normal, the world is in real danger.

Recognising that this is our one and only life gives kindness a terrible urgency. We don't have an eternity to make things right or to offer comfort – we only have now. To be kind is to acknowledge the precious, fleeting nature of everyone else's existence.

Using race to help minorities? Bad. Using it to discriminate against them? Very, very good.
