The author is a GREAT example of someone who should have taken (and learned from) anthropology classes rather than reading Jared Diamond. Happily, @michaelhobbes.bsky.social and @notalawyer.bsky.social learn from anthropologists and historians and then rip this bullshit to shreds.

Great episode that has lodged in my brain the idea that Harari is just Joe Rogan for people who want feel smart instead of feeling like they’re funny

The media fell in love with Trump — the most mendacious person in the world — because he gave them “interesting stories” and now they’re doing the same with her for the exact same reason

How many times exactly does Trump have to hand billions to rich people or destroy the safety net before the media stops calling him a populist?
Every article by a 'savvy' political analyst reads like a focus group transcript with a low-information voter.

This is very good. Clear, calm, factual, and devastating for proponents of bans on puberty blockers for trans youth.

Puberty blockers: why politicians overriding doctors sets a dangerous precedent
The government’s ban on puberty blockers undermines clinical expertise and targets trans youth with a policy that lacks evidence, consistency and fairness.

One fascinating and yet expected thing is that none of the big foreign accounts pretending to be American are left of center, or even anti-Trump. Not a single one. Says something about the economics and geopolitics of political grifting
If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

Everything wrong with political journalism in one graf. This is not a policy proposal that exists but that doesn’t matter, what matters is that someone “won” by asking it bsky.app/profile/larr...
What a strange framing and characterization. How does one describe his blatantly dishonest, racist question about taxes as “press[ing] the Mayor-elect on his policy proposals”? In what way does this lying troll emerge as a “winner“?

...what? WHAT?!

Taking "meritocratic elite" as "people with degrees", aka the PMC, there's not a group more concerned about schools and how we teach children!

Left, right, center, it's a constant topic! Even amongst those without kids! Cause our friends have kids and we care about them!

FO, NYT
And of course we get the brain-dead political analysis. The biggest crisis of public education (and the greatest threat to kids with mental illness) is the Republican Party's funding cuts. But guess who gets blamed in the conclusion of the article?

I don't know the criminal standard specifically but Linehan did say *in court* that he was motivated by the victim's status as a trans person. If a clear statement of explicit prejudice isn't enough then you need a new standard.

Starting to think Torchwood: Children of Earth was too optimistic given the fact that the British government apparently doesn’t need any pretext at all to sacrifice a large percentage of “undesirable” kids.
Apparently this government, if they were fleeing for their lives, would simply abandon their own children to die i guess?

Well, we know now why it was so easy for them to whip against voting to end the two child benefit cap...
BBC News: "the government believe refugees are deliberately bringing their children to avoid deportation"

As opposed to doing what with their children??

I'm old enough to remember when the media had no qualms protesting a place of worship when it was the "Ground Zero Mosque."

It wasn't even a mosque! But Islamophobic pundits called it one anyway because it was easier to fearmonger that way

For Classic Who, I generally recommend City of Death, The Five Doctors, and Remembrance of the Daleks in that order.

For New Who I go with Blink as well. Even putting its reputation aside, the fact that it's Doctor-Lite makes it perfect since you learn the premise of the show as Sally Sparrow does.
What episodes do you tell people to watch if they want to get a feel for Doctor Who? I usually go with Blink, Vincent and the Doctor, and The Eleventh Hour.

NEW PAPER w/ @cselmendorf.bsky.social & @jkalla.bsky.social:

An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods.

Among white people, the correlation between racial resentment and their voting decision is much, much stronger than between educational attainment and political alignment.

In fact, if you control for racial resentment, education polarization basically disappears.

Yes, Trump dominates among the *white* working class (if defined as people without a college degree). But even here, religion played a key role: In 2024, about 86 percent of non-college white evangelicals voted for Trump – vs. only a minority of the non-evangelical white working class.

Ideas of a “populist revolt” against ignorant liberal elites, a backlash against “woke” radicalism are stubbornly persistent – as is the idea that Trump emerged from the election with a broad mandate to correct course and impose his radical agenda.

But it’s just not true.
