This must be weird news to see if you’re one of the literally hundreds or even thousands of university administrators who preemptively censored faculty, scrubbed websites, changed the names of centers, etc.

Global health efforts are not some woke nicety, they are the difference between life and death for many. Ten million die each year from infectious diseases alone. If you add RFK Jr's attack on vaccines to Trump's defund of USAID and exit from WHO, the casualty numbers over time will be monstrous.

I'm in a 'purple' area in a blue state, and I started showing up to local democratic party stuff last year, and at 40 have been the youngest person there by at least a decade, usually 2-3 decades most of the time.

Even if you live in a blue district, showing up will do a lot more than you think.
If you are:
-a leftist
-who does not like the DNC
-and lives in a red district
-that is rural or suburban

I encourage you to check out your local Dems and maybe get involved. Red districts are often ignored by national Dems; you may have more influence to push left locally than you think.

THIS is why we need to know our communities and neighbors.

It would be really fucking funny if Switzerland just didn't allow Trump to step into the country for WEF.

Alas we've never exactly been at the forefront of international fights.

But I can still picture it and laugh.

I wrote up a longer piece about scammers pretending to be me, how you can tell it's not me, and why neither I nor any other "big name" author is likely to be emailing you at all, and certainly not with obviously "AI"-generated verbiage. Please feel free to share.

Reminder: Scammers Are Out There Pretending to Be Me (and Other Authors as Well)
Three times in the last week I’ve gotten inquiries from authors, about email from an account purporting to be me. This account praised their book in a very “AI” fashion and tried …

VERY important for US university professors because the semester is starting!!!

If certain people come to your class asking for this information, you can send them away! (Ofc it is not guaranteed they will go away, but this is how it technically works.)

Reminder to professors because I am seeing some baffling discussions. If classroom information is requested by authorities:

Records requests should go to your records dept, not you, the professor.

Subpoenas, judicial warrants should go to your legal dept, not you, the professor.

Amazing work by this aquarium supply store
Went to an aquarium supply store last night and was delighted to see the staff in N95 masks and all customers still required to wear masks also. I wish I saw more places still doing this. The “Covid surcharges” sign behind the till particularly got me 😂

I have some bad news. One, if you need to use ChatGPT for your graduate application letter, you are not ready for graduate school.

Two, no, not "everyone is doing it" and those who don't do it aren't "losing out." ChatGPT is not an advantage.
An impressive number of graduate applications this year used the phrase “curiosity-driven approach” 🤔

I must point out that the consensus position of Greenlanders is not "we are content with Denmark," it is "we are trying to build up and diversify our economy so that we can become an independent country at soonest possible opportunity." Notably, of course, neither of these positions involves America

Saw a lot of headlines saying "wikipedia is embracing ai" being tossed around tabloids, and I'm pretty sure they were maliciously written to make you feel a certain way about Wikipedia. What's actually happening is that wikipedia is demanding payment for data scraping and the corpos don't like that.
Sure. AI companies have ALWAYS been training their models on Wikipedia content, which under the free and open access model is available to anyone — including AI companies. Agreements like these require AI companies to limit and offset the strain they place on Wikimedia infrastructure.
