Honestly, this makes every org and institution that folded at the merest threat of an attack on trans rights just look as pathetic as they are.

It does the same for everyone that excused them.

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

“Hype is seldom based on concrete promises,” explains Stewart. “It is, by design, a speculation boom: it generates a narrative of innovation and future value, but it is driven by logics of business and media, not education or the public good. Hype’s purpose is to generate investment.”

The common good is a set of shared commitments.

To the rule of law. To democracy. To tolerance. To equal opportunity. To upholding the truth.

We cannot have a functioning society without these shared commitments.

I tend to agree with this. If AI works like its cheerleaders claim/hope it will - replacing whole swathes of human labour - then they need a real economic plan for dealing with the consequences of that. This can only mean heavily redistributing the profits.
you either need universal basic income for humans or you must limit the use of Gen AI in such a way that humans aren’t radically impoverished as a result.

you cannot have both, both for morality reasons and also because this is the kind of thing that can result in globally-nightmarish conflict.
This seems more like an argument for universal basic income than for limiting technology. (I think both are probably futile in the current political environment, but I’d prefer the latter.)

grade 8. 1984. we were *briefly* allowed to play tapes in gym class.

we'd never seen our gym teacher run until Darling Nikki came on. poor woman heard the word 'masturbate' & lit off across that court in a Chariots of Fire slow mo waddle/dash i can still see to this day.

best gym class EVER.
And the _real_ catalyst was that then-11-year-old Karenna Gore had played Purple Rain at a party her parents Al & Tipper Gore were hosting. Members of congress and their spouses had been invited, and Darling Nikki came on, scandalizing all these nice white folks who’d never heard of sex. Drama!
