The thing about short stories is that there are a lot of things that are typical for them but the only real requirement is the length. But I definitely also had teachers who'd view these typical things as required. I guess being like "a short story is a story that's short" is not complex enough

And making a nuke is not super complex. There is a lot to optimize but if you just want a nuclear explosion, the hardest part is enriching the material.

I'm sure somebody has done it. The translations would be into current English as opposed to 200-year-old German, that alone should help. And if the translator's primary goal is to get across the meaning of the original, they definitely can produce a translation that's easier to read.
