I paid £16.75 for #Silksong, and it took me one step closer to Nirvana.

CW: VERY very minor allusion to lategame content that could still be spoilery

I don’t want to worry anyone but Digging for Britain has just said that the largest UK archaeological dig is currently taking place a stone’s throw from where MR James set A Warning to the Curious.

Today on Computers Are Bad: Speed Reading

https://computer.rip/2025-12-08-speed-reading.html

A bit of the history of speed reading, and then I try not to doom spiral too bad about AI. The attempt is not entirely successful.

Reading these paragraphs repeatedly to figure out what's wrong beyond 'I went hiking and looked at stuff.' At a glance, they *seem* fine. The imagery's trying to engage all the senses. But the more I look, the more I ask, "what's this imagery *actually doing?*"
I went hiking and looked at stuff.
I went hiking and looked at stuff.
I went hiking and looked at stuff.
I went hiking and looked at stuff.

Ah yes, Factor Fexcectorn, my favourite boss from Kirby and the Forgotten Land
"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se

I think there's been a concerted to effort to portray people who make art of all sorts as basically dilettante's who only make art because they don't have anything else to do. Which is not even remotely the reality. It's actually a rather Victorian throwback.
There’s something in here about why people feel so entitled to use ChatGPT to “write novels” and “make art”, because they clearly view these honed skills as the domain of the elite and not something people spend a fuckton of time and energy to get good at.
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

So many folks bang on about plagiarism and copyright, but forget this second, VERY interesting bit: Publishers aren't your friend & AI is a stick they won't think twice about beating us with.

Deleting English literature degrees would actually be a really interesting case study in whether the UK can destroy its own understanding of its own culture on an almost micro level. Worry not, sceptred isle, heir to Shakespeare, Byron, the Shelleys and Tolkien, you dont need to know who those are.
Badenoch wants to eliminate ‘rip off degrees’ like English. The usual philistine crap that a degree is just about work. The mission to create the stupidest nation on earth. And counterproductive. Young people will work for years. They’ll retrain endlessly. A degree can help them learn how to learn

Summary of comments:

(1) Last study I saw showed USA reading rates *increasing* in kid & retired groups, declining only in working age adults

(2) France also has smart phones, video games, COVID etc.

(3) Agreed audiobooks are great for commutes, but labor causes the commutes

It’s a labor issue.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

We're all actors, asking that nebulous, all-seeing and unseeing mass of eyeballs, known as "The Audience," to PLEASE CLAP
I don’t think ppl understand the whole “who cares if nobody likes it! make content for yourself” is extremely dismissive
Bc we ARE making the content for ourselves but it feels /bad/ when people don’t engage or show interest. You can care about both at the same time
