Exactly right: the more relevant precedents aren't the last two Trump impeachments. They're Johnson, which came within one vote of conviction and basically neutered him, and Nixon, which effectively succeeded.

In part b/c Johnson and Nixon were both lame ducks, as Trump wasn't before but now is.

Democrats are divided about pursuing a third Trump impeachment.
But Trump’s second term actions — abuses of federal power amidst a racial backlash — fits well with previous historical patterns. 🧵

I used to walk smoking into a favorite diner from the parking lot, sit down and have a midnight breakfast, smoke a couple cigarettes and have a couple cups of coffee, and smoke all the way back to the car.

Unthinkable now. And that's a good thing.

Big changes are absolutely possible.
I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted

Yep. We're getting an expanded immigrant carceral state, with much of its activity unfolding outside the law -->
This is such a good piece: More than anyone except Trump, Miller's personal worldview is reshaping our government. He sets targets that fuel invasive immigration round-ups that are indifferent about how is captured. We have to build a new detention state for the people being rounded up.
