Rob Reiner took the lawless hero — Jason Bourne, Ethan Hunt, Batman — and reminded us that this is actually the bad guy. It’s a lesson worth remembering today.

😮 A university without a library ceases to be a university. Full stop. I’m flabbergasted that a “determination” about a library’s future — besides FUND IT AND STAFF IT — needs to be made by an institute of higher learning.

Rob Reiner's company Castlerock was one of the production companies behind Seinfeld.

Jerry Seinfeld:

"Our show would have never happened without him. He saw something no one else could. When nobody at the network liked the early episodes, he saved us from cancellation."

To me, the things to report on are clear:

1) Did either Nuzzi or Lizza have facts that should have been before the public before election or at least RFK Jr's confirmation.

2) Did Nuzzi threatening Lizza with pretty profound legal consequences keep that from happening, or no.

@benjaminjriley.bsky.social very much enjoyed your piece about AI and “thin” empathy. Thank you.

This piece by @benjaminjriley.bsky.social, exploring @mjcrockett.bsky.social's research, offers an important window into the nuances of human empathy and the appeal of seemingly empathetic AI companions.

I'm going to be thinking about the need for "thick empathy."
"We face a social dilemma around the role of these empathy machines. Those who are most cognitively vulnerable may turn to these tools when what they most need is a flesh-and-blood human who will care for them, not sycophantically, but with thick empathy arising from the experience of being human."

1) the sheer scale of their wealth is unprecedented - we will have trillionaires soon

2) this groups disdain for traditional charities, universities and now public health - they have open contempt for sources of shared prosperity that the last robber barons (ostensibly) supported

the proximate reason i post here — beyond the fact that i like a lot of you and enjoy reading your thoughts and jokes and observations — is that this is a non-algorithmic platform where people share lots of stuff and people read what is shared. that's still valuable even if it doesn't "influence!"

to be clear, it is fine if you just want to dick around! that's what i mostly do on here. but the idea that "you're giving up the fight to influence people by not using X" is belied by the fact that effectively *no one* uses X. and i don't see any of the "use X!" people on tiktok or youtube.

Rob Reiner either made your favorite movie, or made somebody you know’s favorite movie. If you’re a Californian, he’s also part of the reason you or your friends can get married. He has changed more lives for the better than this asshole commenting on him ever did.

100%. Unless you actively work against it, and even sometimes if you do, excessive wealth serves as a perceptual disorder that makes it harder to accurately assess the world around you.
I have grown to believe that excessive wealth does something to your brain that is analogous to a serious head injury
