A key reason why I (usually) align with the new liberal/neoliberal wing is that it presents a fundamentally positive-sum view of the world where even difficult issues are ultimately solvable with patience, pragmatism, and good policy

This is, I think, simultaneously both optimistic *and true*

Underrated benefit of Mamdani winning: it's very likely to make Trump and co. go apeshit and as a result this will probably happen

How viable are your cordon sanitaires going to be when the projected vote share of the parties you're trying to keep out is consistently in the 30-40% range?

Speaking from experience: not very well!

I know we're all focused on the US right now for obvious reasons but seeing Euros talk shit about the situation while ignoring their own ominously looming polls does rather annoy me

Watching the pro-10/7 stuff was also just incredibly, incredibly dark and depressing

How could you not see? How did you not know? What made you think this could ever end any other way? What was an useless massacre - itself a terrible crime - ever going to achieve that multiple wars failed to do?

Reading the last two years of discourse has felt surreal, given how obvious it was on day one how this would end

In that time, I have been surprised by only 3 things:

1) the total collapse of Iranian power
2) Netanyahu's ability to maintain office
3) the sheer dearth of Israeli casualties

Only 10 senators voted for Bernie Sanders's amendment to reduce the Pentagon budget by 10% and instead expand veteran dental care:

Baldwin (D-WI)
Markey (D-MA)
Merkley (D-OR)
Murphy (D-CT)
Sanders (I-VT)
Smith (D-MN)
Van Hollen (D-MD)
Warren (D-MA)
Welch (D-VT)
Wyden (D-OR)

It's very funny that Fallout New Vegas believes in geographic determinism where the inevitable fate of Nevada is an economy centered around gambling

They are going to lose control of the country. They have the debased billionaire class, they have a small army of violent bigots. But they don’t have most Americans. They absolutely don’t have enough guys and they know it

I am upgrading from "we should probably run Platner" to "please run Platner"

If the election nerds (complimentary) are saying this then I think it is if nothing else worth the gamble

“Asshole with a thin leftist veneer” is what a substantial number of people want, because they don’t actually want to make the world better, they want to feel they’re part of a club and that their resentment of life and desire for someone to tell them how to think is justified.

I have never understood this guy's appeal. He's just an asshole with a thin leftist veneer. Like Vaush with even less substance.

How can we make immigration durably popular? Alex Kustov has an answer & a bunch of novel evidence in his new book

The key is not for liberal politicians to stoop to xenophobia, they must instead to make immigration policy *demonstrably* beneficial to the nation

Joey Politano's review of In Our Interest
4/5: Immigration has extremely massive economic benefits. It is also one of the most divisive issues in modern democracies. Overcoming the politics of xenophobia is thus one of the most important and ...

Though admittedly it was done in a fit of optimism for the guy who would spearhead the global response to a great catastrophe, instead of to avoid a childish fit of pique

Not to say that he deserves it of course, but to be fair to Trump they did give Obama the peace prize for basically no reason

It is times like these that I am comforted by the fact that I believe in hell. I'm sure I will have my own difficult conversation with St. Peter - I have faults aplenty - but there is something reassuring in knowing that will be a final accounting for those who caused such suffering.

Idk if he can do it, Collins is a strong ass candidate, but he's a whole lot younger, would bring a good brand to the party, and it's well past time to invest in new talent

I'm sure the real election nerds will weigh in and I'll defer to them, but I don't see Mills having a huge upside over Platner

As a moderate, pragmatic, winning-focused Democrat, can I just say:

I think we should probably just run Platner

Any form of media that involves an angry man telling an audience what to be angry about for several hours a day is probably not good for the human brain

Also a large swathe of the state is technically desert so we've got that going for us too

Really the biggest problem is the fact that we have a coastline (admittedly a pretty big deal) but on almost every issue I can think of Alaska being West Coast sticks out like a sore thumb
captainmeap.bsky.social
I realize it doesn't match up so strongly with the geography but culturally the West is just an infinitely better fit

Large native population, rural, land rights disputes, raw material production, generally conservative with a more libertarian flair, and, also, a weirdly large number of Mormons
