A key reason why I (usually) align with the new liberal/neoliberal wing is that it presents a fundamentally positive-sum view of the world where even difficult issues are ultimately solvable with patience, pragmatism, and good policy

“American Indian” is not an offensive term and the weirdos who searched through my tens of thousands of posts to try and find something they could use to label me a racist are not acting in good faith. The game of trying to set up rhetorical tripwires to attack people you hate is incredibly toxic.
When members of a marginalised group tell you to stop using a term to refer to them, it’s not hard to just… be gracious and stop doing it. Which is much easier and makes you look a lot better than doubling down on a racist term and telling the people who find it offensive that they’re wrong.

i broadly agree with the thrust of this; I also think woke 1 failed b/c arguments to not use certain language (e.g. "unhoused" replacing homeless), which much of the public chafed at, were used as cover for attacks on the broader goal (e.g. anti-sexual harassment/racism stuff, which elites HATED)
To the extent “woke” was a thing people were mad at, it was mostly that people hate a culture of scolds telling them what words they can use, what things they can enjoy, and then launching “politically correct” alternatives to cultural touchstones.

this is exactly why i’ve started calling myself a “public school democrat.” they took me to independence hall on a field trip in elementary school, and i latched on to the soaring, righteous propaganda, hook, line, and sinker. i bought the hype, and the imperative to make it real

FAMU can't use the word Black on anything posted around campus related to Black History Month, to stay in compliance with Florida state laws against DEI. Black students can't use the word Black at their Historically Black College during Black History Month.
