"suicide" might just be a term that escaped from legalese into colloquial speech. I wonder what the French equivalent of "sui" is ..
cathyw.bsky.social
It seems related to the Spanish usage of "se" as the object of a reflexive verb (implying that the action was performed upon oneself). But English "self" seems to come from the Germanic side of the family tree.

Also apparently means "of legal capacity to act on one's own behalf" in modern legal Latin.

Getting really archaic: "sui juris" -in his/her own right, my reference for it is a title held by a woman that's hers rather than derived from her husband?

I mean this sincerely: If the presence of the National Guard at Union Station is supposed to make it feel safer, they could patrol the dark parking lot at 10:30 at night instead of hanging out in front of the closed Starbucks or whatever.

Sort of, in the legal term 'sua sponte' (where a judge does something of their own accord rather than in response to a petition). My 'just enough to be confidently wrong' knowledge of Latin suggests it's the same noun in a different case?

If this ceasefire happens - and I hope it does - Western media will talk about 'peace'. This will be inaccurate. What they will mean is 'quiet', a reversion to the background level of violence that Palestinians have faced for decades. Peace can only come with the end of the occupation and apartheid.

johnny had one of the most iconic voices in american music history. he was so full of heart that he covered one of trent reznor's pieces and trent praised him so highly that he said that song belonged to johnny now.

we loved him. we miss him, but not as much as he missed june. rest well, johnny.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."

that's okay, though, he keeps the service running by constantly launching new POS satellites that will re-enter the atmosphere in 3-5 years!

jiminy crickets. out of 592 payloads to reenter the atmosphere this year 36 were *not* Starlink.

some of the Starlink satellites had been in orbit less than three years.

this is not a good use of resources, *especially* low earth orbit, which should be held in common by all humanity.

When I see this, I wonder if people realize that Jim Crow racism in the American south was a type home-grown fascism. It was not (just) a superficially genteel system of social deference. Refusing to defer was often met with incredible violence designed to terrorize the entire Black community.

(and I have seen nothing to dissuade me from the notion that among the reasons Elon is so hot to get to Mars ASAP is that he knows about Kessler Syndrome, knows Starlink is contributing to it, and wants to get out before it happens and trap the rest of us here.)

I literally stood and listened to a very professional and experienced IT consultant just this week advising that my very rural workplace needs to transition our fire-dialing system from our phone lines to one that connects directly to Elon Musk's Starlink satellites because "they never fail."

lede = introductory section in journalism

bury the lede = hiding the most relevant pieces of a story within other distracting information

Allegedly, it’s spelled ‘lede’ to avoid confusion with ‘lead,’ which was the strip of metal that would separate lines of type.
