I wonder who those almost 1,600 J6ers Trump pardoned were then. Or the 14 Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, Trump commuted their sentences were.
It wasn't just trump, garland didn't go after any of the 1/6 ring leaders. He did the stock "low hanging fruit and call it a day" crap. Garland was an embarrassment to the point where his Federaliat Society ties raises suspicions that his clear disinterest and foot dragging was intentional.

there's a long understanding of certain disasters overriding immediate conflict, too. during Monte Cassino - an incredibly hard-fought and bloody battle - fighting stopped at least once when troops were buried in the collapse of a building and both sides helped dig the buried men out
And look, I say this as someone that has no problems with going after troops that are retreating—they're legitimate targets. But as quite a few people have pointed out (and it isn't an area I really know), being shipwrecked has a lengthy legal history of making you a protected class.

this is part of Hegseth's character. one thing he was known for before this was getting drunk and bragging about his role in war crimes which either didn't happen or he verifiably could not have participated in.
That's the part that sticks with me.

This isn't some Tom Clancy novel where they do war crimes because it's the only way they can get at the evil terrorist criminal mastermind or something.

Even if we believe them -- and, ha ha, no! -- they murdered low level drug runners. That's it!
this is just murder, and pointless murder at that.

Note that these lines quite deliberately divide Black majority precincts among the districts. This map would never have passed scrutiny under the pre-Roberts Voting Rights Act.

Publishing all the other boat murder videos but refusing to release the one of the two survivors being killed is an admission they know exactly how bad it looks. There's no other distinction to draw there, no reason to publish the others while withholding that one.

SPLIT IN HALF?

The boat was capsized and SPLIT IN HALF?

I got nothing folks.

Trials. Prison. Everyone.

If you told me this was a psy-op to make me rethink my moral opposition to the death penalty, I would at least have to think hard about you being right.

The fact that four hostile drones tried to hit Zelenskyy’s plane & it’s barely a blip in the news cycle should terrify everyone. We’ve been dragged so deep into the chaos era that an attempted strike on a world leader doesn’t even break through. When this becomes normal, the world is in real danger.

the reason why those "the left made me do ___" things ring so hollow is that Trump has been, since 2015, the primary actor in US politics. everything, in some shape or form, has been a reaction to his assault on the sanctity of the US constitutional order
2020-2021 was a particularly bad time but as long as Trump kept upping the ante the polarization was going to happen anyway

Trump’s favorite military misadventures are always deadly airstrikes on parties that can’t strike back against us

And, as for the Navy, these are career sailors. So it’s not just Trump and Hegseth, it’s MAGA exploiting existing cultures that actively celebrate violence & killing and devalue life

I don't think the Justices understand the extent to which they are playing with fire. The more they do this, the more District Courts will engage in open disrespect of the Supreme Court, because what other response is there to open disrespect directed at them? That's bad for the Judiciary, period.

If your wage leads to a "tight" budget that still allows you to live in a "well-off Boston suburb" it is not poverty.
1/ I may write something about this, but I've noticed some folks, notably Noah Smith, but others as well, deriding the $140,000=poverty in today's US guy.

So I thought I'd work out what a family of 4 budget would look like in my well-off Boston suburb (Brookline).

TL:DR--pretty damn tight...

As Justice Kagan begins her dissent by pointing out, what is even the point of trial, of fact-finding, of clear error, of standards of review, when the Supreme Court simply ignores every single part of that and decides everything purely on the papers without any real consideration of the facts?

You know when you (or at least army infantry) get taught to clear the X, the usual rule is that as soon as you walk past a wounded or surrending enemy they are now in your care and harming/killing them is a war crime.

Sitting around for 41 minutes debating what to do is like something from satire.
