It is a massive problem that a lot of the "political activism" on the internet (inasmuch as posting counts as that) primarily serves to create a permission structure to use slurs on people you don't like, often on the basis of national origin or sexual orientation and identity

The idea that sexual abuse is part of “private” life instead of a public crisis has done incalculable damage. Anti-rape activists have to fight to even make it possible to expose sexual abuse as a wrongdoing in public without being silenced and undermined. That fight is far from won

it does not have to fucking be like this. judy shepard, the mother of matthew shepard who was murdered in a homophobic lynching in 1998, did not go around making speeches excusing her son's killers, she became an activist bringing attention to homophobic violence.
