I absolutely think they realize how much damage us just living our lives does to their movement. I live in a more conservative than not area and I know the number of times I have just sat having a beer next to a guy at a bar that has heard the worst about us has opened eyes that we're just people.
the problem for transphobes is that at this point nearly everyone has met or at least interacted with a trans person and figured out that they're just people trying to live their lives. this is why they want to ban trans people from existing in public at all costs
