Back in like 2012, before I transitioned, a woman I know told me, apropos of nothing and completely unprompted, that she could accept her son being anything when he grew up, except trans. This was a very liberal, progressive woman.
I do have to point out that even with a more-accepting society, there is a gulf between "I am okay with queers" and "I am okay with my kid being a queer". People can support LGBT rights in the abstract and then get spooked when their own precious cinnamon roll makes them a "non-traditional family".

It's still a tragedy that the Japanese show Miss Sherlock only lasted for one season
It never got far enough to confirm they were *definitely* lesbians but there was an awful lot of queercoding and subtext going on

The original novel, that takes place in "modern" day (1980s), and is about comic *strip* characters who talk in visible word balloons. I love the Zemeckis film, but would be fascinated by a faithful adaptation of the book.
