The speech is seen as Lincoln's emergence from the political wilderness and established him as a leader in the new Republican party.

The three (yes, three!) hour long speech was a spectacle and drew an immense crowd to Peoria's courthouse square.

I live in Peoria, IL. Incidentally, today is the 171st anniversary of Lincoln's Peoria Speech, made on Oct. 16, 1854. Made in direct response to the Kansas-Nebraska act, which was crafted by his great political rival Stephen A. Douglas.

While this is going on here, ICE has been spotted on foot + in vehicles across SW + NW sides of Chicago. Can't verify reports rn, but also presuming suburbs. Yesterday was brutal. It's not lost on us they have more agents free for weekend kidnappings now with their facility secured by state police.
