Dutch Railways: social profit of €1.33 billion, financial loss of €141 million. It delivers 11x (!!!!) more value to society than it costs.

Via:
social inclusion
increase in property values near stations;
welfare of employees and consumers;
productive use of travel time.

Research shows that NS generates social profit: 1.33 billion euros
This is according to a new study by Professor Dirk Schoenmaker (Rotterdam School of Managemen) and Wander Marijnissen of strategic consultancy firm ftrprf.

On the bright side from bard to verse still there
Hearing and visual losses are terribly isolating. Social interactions, the more meaningful the better, are thought to be protective against cognitive loss. My specialty was dementias and sadly with dementia use of aids more difficult so probably works both directions
Excellent idea ❤️
Or notable libraries
This is rather sweet. Major language skill loss indicative more of other dementias BUT key point is great, glasses, hearing aids and sorting out other external issues is really really important!
I seem to remember way back in time in 1977 all big firms had a statutory obligation to employ a proportion of people with physical/mental limitations - with requirements to support them appropriately. Did they? If so what happened?

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Politics is not like selling biscuits, where the task is to find out what people like & flog it to them.

It's a moral activity. It's about arguing for the things you believe in. It's about *shaping* the "median voter".

Farage has moved the centre-ground of politics. His opponents can move it back.
Haha that’s very sweet of you but we expected wind - because it’s Iceland! Crossed 🤞we may see the aurora before we leave
Sorry just a retired psychiatrist married to a public health doctor. But we love Iceland - our links were keeping Icelandic horses and sheep in UK - and we are here visiting right now.

this is great for two reasons

1, the obvious: brilliant deconstruction of how patriarchy tries to sell total emotional isolation as not just a side effect but a GOAL of doing masculinity correctly

2: the repeated mentions of Buffalo Wild Wings made me laugh so hard
this is, hands down, the best video I've seen on men's influencer content and it's not close either

Here are some nice mushrooms
We bought a Jack Russell terrier supposedly from a line of ratters. Nope, never. The cats also not interested. But getting a Grandpa’s Feeder, storing the feed in metal bins and assiduously cleaning up all feed spillages kept control - more or less. The dog is a real star, just not a ratter.
Ooops! But he just did it ‘badly’
Similar difficulty I think but the grammar is very Latin-like! Doggedly learning but would love to have started younger. It is a wonderful place to be able to live.
Good point as less risk from strangers than known adults. Live in Portugal so seeing the far right surging - Chega - and after nearly 5 years here it feels a little less welcoming. Remaining hopeful though 🇵🇹 When we first arrived I was told “we are a we society not a me society” - which I love
I had never seen this but thank you, it’s so clear. Everyone is ‘other’ to an individual (as long as individuation from mother is successful) I think the terrible first step is considering others to be ‘lesser’ and from then onto ‘not like me so not quite human’. (Because I am my gauge of human?)

Nigel Farage is the biggest charlatan in British political history.

And here's what his constitutents in Clacton really think:

Obviously they meant Queen Victoria because these bell ends are stuck in 1851.

We haven't had a queen in almost three years.

Phoney patriots.
