the updated original intro and ending for detective conan's 30th anniversary opener are giving me more feels than i was expecting, what a fun choice

i can accept that ai coding tools might be a thing (though i would need to see a study showing that they save time since we have one showing the opposite)

but i want to point out that the ai coding tool didn't actually solve the problem here

one of the fundamental challenges of the liberal project: if you fail at something -- say, publishing a book -- you can be open to the possibility that you suck, or you can find somebody saying you never had a chance for reasons outside your control

i don't know how you get folks to pick the former
Fact | You can't write something predicated in the utterly ludicrous assumption that white men are being excluded from publishing unless you are racist.

it brings to mind trump's obvious desire for the nobel peace prize. they're all so incredibly certain that they are the best at whatever it is they do

and i can understand that when you actually are good at something yet you let the ego get a little too swollen, but when you straight-up suck?

Imagine interviewing a victim of torture and independently confirming the details of his torture and then being told you can’t broadcast it because the people who ordered the torture wouldn’t give their side of the story.

the only thing they actually want is for the maitre d' at the nice restaurant to alight with recognition and mutter "OH, ms. nuzzi! give me just one moment and i'll have a table for you" and the subsequent strut down the runway as everyone cranes their necks to see who's getting vip treatment
The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

the people in bari's social circle have taken their ability to connect a history of vile rhetoric with actions targeting the subject of that rhetoric and burned it from their minds, as the only way to be part of the circle is studious ignorance about people's actual motivations

oh if we know the claims are false, that means they were investigated and there's a record of their falsity then? can we see those records?
* DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE: SOME DOCUMENTS RELEASED CONTAIN UNTRUE AND SENSATIONALIST CLAIMS MADE AGAINST PRESIDENT TRUMP THAT WERE SUBMITTED TO THE FBI RIGHT BEFORE 2020 ELECTION

* DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE: TO BE CLEAR CLAIMS AGAINST TRUMP ARE UNFOUNDED AND FALSE

to me this reads like someone who has never actually thought about or participated in the news-gathering product coming in and being like "obvious gaps here you guys! let's try a little harder mmkay"
The full Weiss memo is dogshit
-who cares if administration figures “regret” sending people to CECOT
-who cares about the criminal histories of the people we sent to CECOT, we sent them to a torture prison
—who cares about the “debate” over the legality of sending people to a torture prison

my base feeling here: these companies have known for decades that what they do is harmful at a base level and cannot be mitigated

and yet bp still stands for british petroleum and not british power. there's no reason exxon couldn't be the world leader in solar panels right now!
48. That exception of course is the fossil fuel producer. They are hostile to energy productivity for the same reason John Henry didn't like the steam shovel. They can't compete with it. Wins for consumers come at their expense. Wins for the climate come at their expense.

one of those times where you have to ask yourself how yglesias' writing would look if he was literally a paid agent of the gop

like if he was taking koch money for years to pretend to be liberal and push dems constantly right from inside the party, how would that output differ from this?
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

Trump thinks complying with the law means releasing entirely redacted Epstein files like this.

This is a brazen cover up and deeply disrespectful to survivors.

Pam Bondi must release ALL the files NOW.

this does not justify another round of abuse, of course, but i think the reason people react the way they do to stuff like this is the photo shoot

that's what makes this story presentation look the same as their nuzzi profile or any of the other reputation-laundering shit they do
This is going to trigger another round of abuse for this woman but the basic facts appear to be that she was separated at the time and so was the CEO. She recoiled on the jumbotron because her husband was attending the same concert.
At a Coldplay concert in July, Kristin Cabot appeared on the Jumbotron in the arms of her boss. Cabot retreated, trying to make things right with the people who mattered most. Now, for first time since that viral moment, Cabot is sharing her side of the story. trib.al/I8tWdU4

every single one of these guys wants to say "i'm the objectively better candidate" but none of them actually know that!

i have explicitly gotten jobs before because i was strong at a secondary function that was lacking on a team. you don't know what the hiring folks are actually looking for!

the new york times is here stating as fact that brooks not even one single other time had any contact with epstein, which is of course *not something the times is in a position to know* and not something you would ever let a reporter casually claim in a story

that's how tight the wagons are circled
The NYT imperiously declined to provide details, just declaring their op-ed columnists must of course attend dinners with "noted and important business leaders". But it's not hard to find. The Silicon Valley pantheon was there: Musk, Bezos, Brin, Mayer, Wojcicki, Mundie & Myhrvold of Microsoft... 3/

"at the california times ... [their hires were] just 39 percent male and 31 percent white"

hey guess what percentage of *california* white folk make up? 34.69, says the 2020 census
If you are a white man in media and STILL whining about all the Black/poc/women who "took your jobs" after the absolute bloodbath/backlash and almost violent re-whitening of media, punditry and academia in the past year, you should go to therapy, find god/gods or take up knitting

Just my two cents

yes, the problem with health insurance is specifically that you can't buy it from a lizard or the general
Scalise on GOP healthcare plan: "Car insurance or your homeowners insurance - you turn on the TV, there are commercials w/ lizards & all kinds of other animals that are selling you options to get lower insurance. You don't really have that in health insurance. So we want to open up the marketplace"

the thing that i have not understood this whole time about the total lack of urgency here is that this is a dude who was trying to murder you! he wanted democrats dead and the response *from democrats* was to shrug their shoulders
