lawyers can make for shitty politicians if they forget that the nuance so vital to a legal brief is often poison in politics

this statement is Very Technically Correct, when what it needed to be was Visibly Angry (and we know she knows how to do that)
this is still weak ass bullshit.

a fantastic piece overall, and this is the exact sort of thing i might find tumbling out of my mouth at the grocery store shortly before wishing for the ground to open up and swallow me

i've seen multiple people mad this morning about that "senate negotiators want more ice funding story," which:

-- is from a paywalled outlet on substack called migrant insider that i have never heard of before
-- in the two free grafs does not identify which side those negotiators are on
I'm gonna go a step further than Post here & also note that what fuels this dysfunction is twofold. #1: v few ppl click thru on links posted on social media to read the actual articles & #2: whats developed out of that is a practice of rage bait posts/headlines in order to get engagement pre click
I'm going to be very blunt here: headlines like this and articles like this are a significant part of our media problem because they make people believe things that aren't true

the thing that none of these paeans to comity ever wrestle with is that, in this country, one side's entire thing is "you do you" and the other side's entire thing is "you do what we tell you." one side pushing for coexistence and the other pushing for extermination

guess which dude gets lectured?

we have never been more tracked and targeted in our lives and the funniest part about it is that everyone is still pissing their ad dollars away

i get multiple video ads a day on youtube music for a rural electric co-op that operates a county away, where i do not live or work and barely visit
TurboTax is advertising on my toddler’s yoto podcast and the commercial starts out with, “need to file your taxes?” And I assure you she does not.

I am impeaching Secretary Kristi Noem, who is an incompetent leader and a disgrace to our democracy.

She wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area and has brought her reign of terror to Minneapolis. One of her rogue ICE agents shot and killed an innocent woman today. It must come to an end.

"someone should really do something about that" pretty much sums up the entire elite response to the last decade
Keir Starmer's spokesman tells me that X and Grok's creation of sexual deepfakes of children is "completely unacceptable" but again won't commit to taking direct action against them, or to stop posting there.

i can accept that ai coding tools might be a thing (though i would need to see a study showing that they save time since we have one showing the opposite)

but i want to point out that the ai coding tool didn't actually solve the problem here

one of the fundamental challenges of the liberal project: if you fail at something -- say, publishing a book -- you can be open to the possibility that you suck, or you can find somebody saying you never had a chance for reasons outside your control

i don't know how you get folks to pick the former
Fact | You can't write something predicated in the utterly ludicrous assumption that white men are being excluded from publishing unless you are racist.

it brings to mind trump's obvious desire for the nobel peace prize. they're all so incredibly certain that they are the best at whatever it is they do

and i can understand that when you actually are good at something yet you let the ego get a little too swollen, but when you straight-up suck?

the only thing they actually want is for the maitre d' at the nice restaurant to alight with recognition and mutter "OH, ms. nuzzi! give me just one moment and i'll have a table for you" and the subsequent strut down the runway as everyone cranes their necks to see who's getting vip treatment
The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

the people in bari's social circle have taken their ability to connect a history of vile rhetoric with actions targeting the subject of that rhetoric and burned it from their minds, as the only way to be part of the circle is studious ignorance about people's actual motivations

oh if we know the claims are false, that means they were investigated and there's a record of their falsity then? can we see those records?
* DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE: SOME DOCUMENTS RELEASED CONTAIN UNTRUE AND SENSATIONALIST CLAIMS MADE AGAINST PRESIDENT TRUMP THAT WERE SUBMITTED TO THE FBI RIGHT BEFORE 2020 ELECTION

* DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE: TO BE CLEAR CLAIMS AGAINST TRUMP ARE UNFOUNDED AND FALSE

to me this reads like someone who has never actually thought about or participated in the news-gathering product coming in and being like "obvious gaps here you guys! let's try a little harder mmkay"
The full Weiss memo is dogshit
-who cares if administration figures “regret” sending people to CECOT
-who cares about the criminal histories of the people we sent to CECOT, we sent them to a torture prison
—who cares about the “debate” over the legality of sending people to a torture prison
