It's become normal now for high-level political figures to argue that an entire generation was brainwashed through fake videos into mass anti-Israel political mobilization by TikTok. Complete conspiracy thinking, rooted in zero evidence, based on nothing
Hillary Clinton blames TikTok and “totally made up” videos for young people’s views on Israel and Palestine.

She says social media influenced “not just the usual suspects” but also “young Jewish Americans who don’t know the history and don’t understand.”

Poor dumb young people; indoctrinated by the evidence of their eyes and ears; living in a bubble of what is actually happening instead of here in the real world of billionaire donor events and funder dinners.

All of the companies that make the software I use are increasing their prices, to account for an "investment" in AI.

I'm sat here imagining how my clients would feel if I added 30% to each invoice, because I "really got into gambling".

This is the same argument libertarian make about landlords where they say "you don't have to rent, just go live off grid". it's technically not even true and also instantly recognizable as bullshit if you live in the real world

It's not about if Horses is good or if you like it, it's about the world we're in where a few companies have control over who gets to make money and which artists get to continue working.

Stores can stock whatever they want, but if you don't understand the broader picture you shouldn't speak.

I remember when Valve had to be browbeaten into even offering refunds at the business end of EU law telling them "do this or you can't sell shit here," they are not and have never been "the good guys" no matter how much you liked Team Fortress 2 back in the day

"It isn't REALLY a ban, they could always just sell it elsewhere" is fundamentally the same argument as "they aren't TECHNICALLY a monopoly" in that they both completely overlook the material realities and impacts of companies like Steam across an entire industry and ecosystem
One of the many things worth thinking about re: Steam's ban on Horses is how it highlights is the centralization problem caused by having such a monolithic (and maybe mono-something-else) retail giant.

Independent studios with even humble commercial aspirations are chained to Valve's whims.

a friend of mine wasnt familiar with the situation and understandably was like "the fuck are you talking about" and i keep laughing every time i remember the concept of someone encountering the sentence "horses got sent to the shadow realm" with zero context
very wild to me that horses got sent to the shadow realm while steam still proudly sells lust from beyond, a game where you can receive a nonconsensual blowjob in first person that sends you to the knockoff cenobite dimension so you can have dubiously consensual sex with weird blob monsters.

Dozens of people have pointed out to this dipshit the many, many games Steam proudly sells which boast a rich mix of sex, graphic violence, and other "objectionable content," and would you like to hazard a guess how many of those he's responded to?
On Horses, I appreciate the thoughtful conversations many of you are having with me on this. I still don’t think Valve is in the wrong here, but I genuinely value those engaging in good faith and sharing their perspective. Definitely a topic I’ll keep chewing on for a bit.

the HORSES affair is a startlingly low bar to cross to see if people actually care about protecting games from censorship of upsetting themes because it's far tamer and has way more moral clarity than a lot of stuff that doesn't get banned. but it's also very clarifying to see who can't cross it

I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

If I claimed that "Moby-Dick" is an allegory for capitalism, I might have to do some mild rhetorical gymnastics to pull that off, but it'd take a genuinely extraordinary argument to justify the claim that, for example, "Moby-Dick" has a giant robot in it.

Marketplace asymmetry exists in every creative industry, for sure. Getting a movie or album into a big box store always meant it would move more units than if it was only carried by niche retailers.

But asymmetry like *this* seems unique, and only makes the ongoing payment processor issues worse.

Capitalists managed to turn a very simple and *completely normal* problem with automation, into the popular conception of luddites, to the point where they convinced people it's weird to not want to come home missing limbs for a fraction of the wages you deserve.

"So does it count if" let's stop right there. All systems of classification are made up. They cannot be correct or incorrect; they are only useful or not useful. The question you should be asking is not "is A technically B?", but rather, "does it HAVE UTILITY to draw our lines such that A is B?"
