I'm noodling on the next Wicked Problems Collaborative project, so it feels like a good time to create a starter pack. It's been a huge honor to collaborate with this crew - so many great people who are trying to make things better.

Department of Injustice, tho
First, Lindsey Halligan. Now, Alina Habba.

This DOJ is breathtakingly incompetent, not just because it appoints idiots to cases, but because it is willing to break laws to appoint idiots to cases.

No doubt about it. Joe's actions never aligned with his words. If you choose to support crimes of war, you are complicit. The unconditional support bit is either a bold-faced lie, or the dumbest attempt at diplomacy I've ever seen.
this is an accurate enough rap sheet but it still clings to the myth that biden's crimes stemmed from a botched effort to exert "leverage" over israel—rather than accepting the obvious reality, which is that biden was simply a willing and active participant in genocide

"Unless Hegseth and Bradley face criminal penalties for their illegal order, the bottom will drop out of military ethics. There will be no order too blatantly criminal for officers and enlisted personnel in the world's largest and most forward-deployed military to refuse.
If a man personally implicated in war crimes can remain atop the Pentagon, why would he stand by and risk his freedom should Vance (or Trump again) lose the 2028 election?

And unless Bradley sees the inside of a brig, the message to USSOCOM's chain of command is that no action is impermissible.

The South American boat strikes are plainly murders. Now we have the names of the murderers. Do we have the political will to lock them up?

Walmart and McDonald’s are among the top employers of workers who rely on food stamps.

McDonald's CEO raked in $18.2M last year — over 1,000x the company's median employee pay.

Walmart's CEO pocketed $27.4M — 930x the company's median employee pay.

"If you get to decide which orders are lawful and binding, what's the point of the system?"
KARL: Did you know about the judge's order when you issued your order for the planes to continue?

KRISTI NOEM: This is an activist judge. We comply with all federal orders that are lawful and binding.

"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."

Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

Van Hollen: "It's either murder from the first strike if their whole theory is wrong, and I think the weight of the legal opinion is they've concocted this ridiculous legal theory. But even if you accept it, then it is a war crime. I do believe the secretary of defense should be held accountable"

of course the inverse of these findings we already know: cars kill

not just through traffic violence, but also through trapping older people in socially isolated car deserts, barring the physical body both from participating in its own transportation and also the community at large
“The researchers describe the bicycle as a kind of “lifestyle companion” for older adults—a tool that keeps them physically active, mentally sharp, socially connected, & confidently mobile. That combination appears to delay the need for long-term care, preserve independence,& ultimately extend life”

I only remember one thing from my undergrad personal finance class. On day 1, the prof opened with a graph that goes steadily down over time. He said, "What kind of investment strategy performs like this?" Everyone looked puzzled as he said, "Gambling."

We're letting the baddies run wild.
You can't realistically have universal basic income in a society that tolerates the existence of the gambling lobby. For UBI to prosper, the gambling industry has to be smashed.
