Legit problem: Moving game info to Discords is undesirable for a myriad of reasons

Bigger problem: The craft of ASCII art is being forgotten

today I learned to fish for trapdoor spiders :D

what you do is gently open the lid, stick a straw deep into the burrow. they bite on it. when you pull it out quickly, they're attached to it :P

once out they just sit there. they don't have a program for this situation it seems :)

this goes pretty deep! after I put it back on its lid, it was just sitting there for a quite while, before going back in.

Rove beetles are fierce hunters. This one was in a long battle with a large prey: a dung beetle.

I'm a Sucker for Lampreys (And You Should Be Too!), a comic I made about one of my favorite animals in 2024 and printed as a zine. (1/2)
A comic about lampreys. Description of contents:
I'm a jawless, cartilaginous fish who's existed since the Devonian. I comprise the order Petromyzontiformes, and I'm invasive in some places and a keystone in others. I'm not related to eels - my closest relative is the hagfish. My mouth might be scary, but I'm a fascinating animal with an unusual job, and I'm excited to make your acquaintance. (Anatomical diagram also included in this page) An Umatilla creation story describes lamprey losing all his limbs while gambling with Coyote (originally Handgame, but depicted here as Yugioh.) Because of this incident, he has to live in the river and suck on rocks with his big mouth.
(There's also a Nez Perce version where he gambles away all his bones.) There are about 40 species of lamprey, here are details on a few:
Sea lamprey: Found across the American Ocean, though invasive in the Great Lakes. Can grow up to 47" long.
Pouched lamprey: Males have a gular pouch used to oxygenate and massage eggs. They also carry rocks in it.
Pacific lamprey: Culturally and ecologically important to some Native American tribes, but they were considered a "junk fish" and poisoned. Faces migratory issues due to dams.
European brook lamprey: Non-parasitic, doesn't eat as an adult. Lamprey life cycle:
1) Egg
2) Ammocete (larva) with simple eyespots and no teeth. Burrows and eats algae. Termed an "ecosystem engineer" because it aerates the substrate like an earthworm.
3) Transformer (after several years). Develops eyes/teeth/kidneys over a few months.
4) Adult. Migrates to the ocean, parasitizes fish by clamping onto them, rasping with sharp tongue, and sucking their blood out.
5) Spawning. Returns to birthplace and builds a nest called a "redd". Dies after laying eggs. Lampreys feed the ecosystem with nutrients brought back from the sea.

Naphrys pulex, the flea jumping spider, in bronze and black glass, done at last! He is a good doggie. #sciart #invertebrate
A large bronze jumping spider with black glass, eyes perched on my open hand over a wooden table top. The sculpture is highly detailed, with each hair/seta on the spider individually sculpted. A flat lay of the parts list for the bronze spider on a white background. In addition to the large, shiny bronze parts, there is an arrangement of eight black glass eyes, along with five nuts and bolts used to hold the sculpture together.

a small sculpture of a monster, which is being held in a hand.
Its front half is gold and snake-like, but it still has front legs with small claws on them. Its back half is similar to a red fox, with red fur and a tail with a white spot at the tip.
The monster also has a pair of long striped feelers/horns on the top of its head. a small sculpture of a monster, which is facing away from the viewer.

Sometimes, you'll see herring gulls sporting stylish bands! The metal band contains a unique ID number, while other band's color tells us where the bird was banded.
A gull looking coyly at the viewer as it steps forward, showing off a red band reading "T7T," designating the location it was banded. Its other leg sports a smaller metal band with the text illegible.

In Super Mario 64, Metal Mario is immune to nearly all damage from enemies, including enemies not normally encounterable with the Metal Cap. The only exception is the giant fish Bubba, who simply does not care and will eat Metal Mario anyway.

This might be my favorite ceramic dinosaur I’ve made so far, a little oviraptor holding an egg! I’ve been jokingly referring to her as Madonna, as in the Madonna and Child.

This piece will be available this Friday, July 11th at 8pm Eastern time!

Goldenrod Crab Spiders (Misumena vatia) are sexually dimorphic in size & color. The spider here is one of a few iNat observations of the species that shows both variations of dimorphism!
