The thing is that 10 years ago transformers hadn't been invented and most people (me included!) would have told you that it would be impossible to get in 10 years to where we are today.

But lots of people here are strangely confident about where this tech is going to be 10 years from now.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

I swear to God Europe has the worst power plugs on the planet. Just absolute garbage. They either fall out of their sockets if you look at them wrong, or won't come out without a forklift. Just absolute clown show shit.

I hesitate to jump into this, but I think this is a useful illustration of the distinction between activists and academics.

Is this historically accurate?

Is this helpful right this minute to the people putting their bodies on the line on the streets of Minneapolis?

Two very different Qs.
I very much disagree with @whstancil.bsky.social on this - how are you going to oppose ICE and the Trump administration if you don't understand that this *is* indeed who you are as a nation and that what we're seeing today is the culmination of a long history of American violence? 1/
People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Europe needs to realize that the only thing trump understands is strength. Cower before him and he'll ask for more and more. Smack him in the face and he'll run away like the scared little bitch he is.
Denmark and Greenland are not alone.
Good to see my colleagues Troels Lund Poulsen and Vivian Motzfeldt.

Arctic security is a shared transatlantic interest, and one we can discuss with our US allies.
But tariff threats are not the way to go about this. Sovereignty is not for trade. (1/2)

Dmitry hits the nail on the head here. We have to pretend that the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet are serious people because a collection of the other dumbest motherfuckers on the planet decided to give them the keys to the car.
It makes me so angry because these are not serious people and we are forced to pretend they are or get scolded for being elitists insufficiently open to new stalls in the marketplace of ideas when we point out a prerequisite for the debate stage should be understanding how literally anything works.

I will never forgive anyone who voted to give this piece of shit the power he has now. Never.
Asked “if there were any limits on his global powers, Mr. Trump said: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

THUCYDIDES: In my book I invented the Melian Dialogue as a cautionary tale

DIPSHITS TALKING ABOUT IR WHO WANT TO SOUND SMART: At long last, we have done the Melian Dialogue from the classic book Don't Do the Melian Dialogue
The Melian Dialogue has a similar role to the Clausewitz quote about “politics by other means” - it exists to give a bit of frisson and even sexual pleasure to morons who have never read those quotes in context but who are still desperate to sound smart.
People who fancy quoting the Melian Dialogue ("the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must") ignore the fact that Thucydides was clearly portraying this as the kind of hubris that squandered Athens' primacy and paved the way for a devastating peer war that it ultimately lost.

This is basically the view of the world that Plato sets out to refute in the Republic. One of the core questions asked therein is: why do powerful people think the mere fact of them exercising dominion makes it good for them to do so? Sure, you *can* get away with stuff if you're powerful - so what?
Here is the Trump Doctrine, as articulated by Stephen Miller in his truly frightening interview with Jake Tapper this afternoon. It is very much like the doctrine of the dictators we fought and defeated in World War II and of Putin today. It is un-American at its very core.

A good start, but Europe needs to be very clear-eyed about where the world is right now, and where it could be headed.

It's honestly a bit surprising how much more complex image analysis gets once you're in the regime of images too big to fit in memory.

All of the solutions you do (use zarr! Split the image!) come with a whole host of issues that you've never had to think about until you run into them.
