I'm begging on my knees, whatever you do, don't think that reading historical fiction - even if it's based on real events - is equivalent to reading an actual history book.

“Gamers aren’t buying games anymore.”

says the triple A gaming studios who have started using AI, cut corners and various amounts of writers and illustrators who made their releases worth playing, and are just reusing and repackaging past titles…

If some guy stole my shit and made millions off it while wiping out my job prospects, and you, as my friend, bought that guy's cheap mass market replica of my shit, you and i would for obvious reasons have a problem. It being a massive company, not a guy, actually makes it even more of a problem.

3. EU-Armee. 4. Digitale Souveränität asap.!

Tell your friends making cool shit in the TTRPG space you're proud of them. You never know when your words can help make the call between persevering or giving up.

Nothing’s “that deep” when you can’t read for context, and have no cultural grounding in literature.
The it’s-not-that-deepification of society is a byproduct of mass functional illiteracy.

Brief an den Weihnachtsmann
Erich Kästner

Lieber guter Weihnachtsmann,
Weißt du nicht, wies um uns steht?
Schau dir mal den Globus an.
Da hat einer dran gedreht.

Alle stehn herum und klagen.
Alle blicken traurig drein.
Wer es war, ist schwer zu sagen.
keiner wills gewesen sein.

It's a mark of our moral disintegration that there's even a discussion about Ukraine giving up land. To even countenance it is to reward colonialism.

From the point of view of being an Actual Historian I just find the idea of needing to be "proud" of history baffling. Identifying with the history of a nation, which is in and of itself a made up thing, is just weird. It is also something that usually corresponds with not studying history.

Does anyone have suggestions for SF & F in which the main character is a full time wheelchair user?

Literally asking this for a friend who uses a chair and wants to see themselves in a book.

Please don't let the fear of not doing something well stop you from trying it for the first time. Write a messy story. Paint a crappy flower. Whittle the worst wooden bear of all time.

The best gift you can give yourself is to have fun and grow.

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

Last week I checked in on a friend, someone who I thought would be one of the very last immigrants (who have any other options) to leave Germany, only to find that they and their family are already in the process of leaving. Their explicit reason: the rise of fascism. Very, very disturbing times.

I used to be a lead bookseller at one of the biggest bookshops in the UK. We had a reputation for being able to "break" books, i.e. build hype for books we got behind and make them start selling.

That often involved handselling just 9 or 10 copies over a couple of days.
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.
