Oh look! In 2024, the Festival Board recognised that an international reputation for supporting artistic freedom of expression was worth protecting.

(Note too that despite News Corp's desperate framing, Friedman was NOT uninvited from the 2024 Writers' Week)
I have been sent a copy of Adelaide Festival's response to the letter raising concerns about Thomas Friedman's participating in Adelaide Writers Week.

The response says that Friedman could not participate due to "last minute scheduling issues".

Shit is going to get really really bad out there pretty soon

Due to the ongoing exodus of speakers, this year’s #AdelaideWritersFestival will now be headlined by Mark ‘Jacko’ Jackson.

The VFL hard man will be interviewed by a panel of ABC staff about his breakout 1986 autobiography Jacko: Dumb Like a Fox.

Get in quick; tickets selling fast.

They have been mostly using helicopters, but planes are also in the mix. Via Flightradar24, Air Tractors were in use in East Gippsland and Walwa, plus there were a few bigger twin engined planes dropping orange retardant on the Walwa fire.

You can tell how serious a fire is by checking Flightradar24. One helicopter - a bit serious. Five helicopters - very serious.

ABC reporter re out-of-control fires near Gellibrand in Victoria’s Otways:

“We were out at the fireground earlier today before things really worsened and we had to nick off. At the time they only had one helicopter helping to try and fight that fire, which was was growing quite quickly.

The comments on this post make it very clear Aussies are aware that this is fossil fuel induced global warming causing this and those companies doing it are both getting subsidized to wreck the planet and not paying a lot or any tax.

Australians across the country are facing extreme and dangerous weather conditions.

We will continue working closely with states and territories to respond, recover, and help communities through what comes next.

How about you grow some balls and tax the tax dodging multinationals and billionaires who rip this country off blind! Maybe then we could afford a proper fire fighting fleet of aircraft etc. Bite the bullet, climate change is real and getting worse. Fossil fuel donors don’t belong in Canberra.

Every massive gas project your government approves will contribute to the frequency of extreme weather events. You know that, and yet you still do it. And we will be made to pay for it. Not the fossil fuel companies

At this point it’d more efficient if those invited/sponsoring the Adelaide Writers Fascfest and still planning on attending, make public statements.

The Adelaide Writers Festival now wrecked by the Adelaide Festival Board, half of which was appointed late last year: a marketing executive; a former politician; a local councillor/real estate agent; an airport manager; a lawyer; a media consultant; and a banker. Another public arts takeover fiasco.

The opposition is claiming the social media ban is a failure because kids have bypassed it and also they haven't put in enough mental health funding to support kids.

If only people could have predicted this when the opposition helped along by News Corp pushed hard for a social media ban.
