Nassau County was a Republican landslide up and down the ballot literally concurrently with Mikie Sherrill landsliding it so hard in suburban North Jersey that Democrats broke through in a bunch of places where they haven't been viable since Watergate, there's simply something wrong with them

Cant believe they’re so worried they actually got Trump (or someone else) to post about it on his twitter account.
Takes away any chance of it flipping, but man they’re scared.
Republicans hitting the all caps Panic button in TN-7

Fitting that the swampiest of all would call on them to “swamp the vote”

"I'm listening to X" is thought termination 99 times out of 100
i have agreed with stancil and i have disagreed with stancil. he has sharp elbows. but the accusation that he is a raging transphobe is not connected to reality. and the weaponization of "i'm listening to trans people" to smear someone because you disagree about fucking econ polling is disgusting
No, I do not “pick on” trans people, I have never done anything like this. And frankly, I think the willingness of some people to completely invent accusations of transphobia in the desperate search for a cudgel against ideological opponents suggests they don’t really care about transphobia

Two of these are actually quite valid complaints against leftists, and would say it regardless of the situation.
How to tell if you have morphed into a liberal:

- he is playing 4D chess!
- he has to be nice to reactionaries to accomplish his goals
- if you’re so smart why don’t you run a communist and win
- ok well where is the revolution if that’s your strategy
- real socialism will never happen here

I think Yglesias's version is worse strategically because the fact that there is a larger base of committed liberals in the US than the UK means he is less often arguing 80/20 positions and more arguing 60/40 or 50/50 positions where he posits that the liberals don't count
the issue here is that both the Labour government in power and @mattyglesias.bsky.social on here basically come to the idea that government should not do any policy proposal that does not qualify as a 80/20 issue on the merits
Perhaps I’m sanewashing popularism, but the idea is that you take positions that are at least not considered radical by consensus for the sake of winning elections so that you can govern well.

This bit from Baldwin's essay The Price of the Ticket is deeply moving to me, but in particular the third paragraph.

And another thing: I'm mad. Please put it in the newspaper that I got mad. I am not ashamed of my emotions, which I believe are a normal and human reaction to events, and I welcome a frank and open discussion of why I feel that way, and possible paths forward.

I am hearing that with her resignation Marjorie Taylor Greene is receiving the enlightenment of Democratic Socialism and unhesitatingly joined her local DSA chapter. She has accepted Zohran Mamdani as the leader of New America. Truly there is no ideology but Socialism, and Zohran is her inspiration!

i wonder how much of Americans' views on driving vs. transit would change if they had to pay for gas/insurance/etc every time they turned on the engine

"i'm not paying $5 to take the train to work twice a day when i can just drive" is a genuine opinion held by so many people

the most likely result of anything that happens is nothing. if you are worried that zohran found common ground with trump or thrilled that trump is going to "help" you should turn off your phone.

but if you are in line to tell a show tunes joke or post a meme of marx with laser eyes, stay in line.

The 2025 NJ Governor's race in the 2012-2022 NJ-03, an incredibly close loss for Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill against former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli in this Burlington/Ocean Centered district maintains the streak for the district to have voted for only 3 Democrats since it's constitution:

we may in fact be entering the era of incumbent disadvantage

the internet has supercharged thermostatic backlash because it is biased towards negativity - negativity gets clicks

right now this is helping us because it’s turning Trump deeply unpopular, but it will hit his Dem successor too
I think the story of the last century or so of politics is that sustained backlashes against parties are basically extinct. We went from the Democrats being shut out of power for decades after the Civil War to Watergate only keeping Republicans out of the White House for four years
Lots of interesting stuff here, including Newsom being weirdly popular among young voters www.theargumentmag.com/p/the-covid-...
