I appreciate @1alexhemingway.bsky.social’s consistent advocacy for non-market housing without downplaying market housing or the broader supply shortage.

By covering not just zoning but also suppressed household formation, this is pretty much the gold standard for left-YIMBYism.
British Columbia’s #housing crisis is severe, but its root causes are familiar: exclusionary zoning, under-building, and chronic neglect of nonmarket housing. Economist Alex Hemingway’s proposals show how governments could reverse course, in BC and elsewhere. jacobin.com/2025/12/cana... #Canada

Hadn’t seen this one before. The good news is that we have many smart solutions to address the surrendering of cities to cars that don’t involve tire spikes. But they DO involve actual political will, strengthened by public understanding of the serious need to act.

💯
The post I was quoting got removed, but this is the article saying "Alberta renters don’t need more ‘supply’ — they need non-market housing options”.

There’s *no* reason that advocacy for non-market housing should downplay or be put in opposition to the importance of overall supply.

Why is the far right triumphing across the West?

Because ordinary citizens are told they're trapped in a zero-sum game - competing with migrants for scarce resources.

This is a lie.

A failed economic order is to blame:

Remember, if a government agency collects public input at physical meetings, especially during the day, they will hear from retired people and people who are being paid by others to be there. Is that really a good sample of the public?

So it unfortunately seems it's time for another #Finland Explainer thread about the most right-wing government in our history. Sigh.

This time, the government that chases record unemployment, record indebtedness, and record fall in the young people's willingness to defend Finland, insults Asians.

How much of the observed global warming was caused by humans? Science's best estimate: ALL OF IT
To be clear: the new, near-exclusive emphasis on natural causes of climate change on the U.S. EPA's website is now completely out of synch with all available evidence demonstrating overwhelming human influence on contemporary warming trends.
