Greetings! 👋🏼 I'm a climate scientist studying the role of vegetation & soils in our future climate. I'm also a geography professor at UGA & a UGA alum (go Dawgs!).

I work with Earth system models (lots of desk time), so I get outside to enjoy nature and exercise as much as I can. We only have one 🌍

I'm excited to moderate this discussion tomorrow (register below👇🏼), which will explore some challenges of AI use in weather and climate applications, including fairness, data democratization, communicating uncertainty, and dealing with data sparse areas or loss of data streams.
Our ongoing webinar series is exploring how #AI is advancing frontiers in #weather and #climate forecasting.

Our final January 8 webinar will outline key messages from the series — focusing on issues of data democratization and AI trustworthiness: https://ow.ly/Gm7T50XS6Ao

It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

The IPCC’s First Lead Author Meeting for AR7, is taking place in Paris this week. The French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr Jean-Noël Barrot welcomed around 600 authors from more than 100 countries to the Quai d’Orsay on Tuesday evening.

@agu.org is in a tricky situation with the federal paramilitaries in New Orleans — they can’t make security promises if they aren’t sure they can keep them, and if the state-run convention authority is telling them they can’t bar warrantless agents, they can’t promise to do so.

Great start to the IPCC lead author meeting!
✔️ Inclusivity was set as a priority for this assessment cycle, we even had a full session on it
🎆 All 3 working groups are together the whole week, it's an exciting opportunity to talk outside discipline boundaries
⏳We have a lot of work to do! Let's go

This is a poignant reflection to read as I prepare to begin my journey as an IPCC author - thank you Ben Santer for sharing this and for the path that you and others have set for this generation of climate scientists.
A climate scientist reflects on 30 years fighting the 'forces of unreason'
Thirty years ago, the IPCC agreed on a historic finding: “The balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate.”

Yesterday I was enjoying quiet coastal Georgia with my family, and today I am headed to Paris for the first author meeting for the next #IPCC report. Sadly, the ecosystems we enjoyed, & my inlaws neighborhood, are at risk from rising sea levels if climate change continues unabated.

Excellent summary of the work I contributed to in @esm2025.bsky.social, an EU-funded project that ends this year. Here are my key take-aways in a 🧵 , but I recommend reading this Research Highlight if you want to know more!
Several papers are in preparation from this work, so stay tuned.
Can we really count on land to deliver climate mitigation?

Our new highlight unpacks what AR/BECCS can do — and where uncertainties bite (carbon stocks, permanence, local climate effects).

Ignoring the harmful effects of climate change will also affect national security.
Today, 20+ senior national security leaders submitted their critique of the DOE's climate report -- "wholly inadequate" for tackling the security risks posed by climate change. Signees include the former Commandant of the Coast Guard, PACOM commander & AFRICOM commander. Read their comment here:

Having spent much actual and emotional time and energy responding to this report, I whole-heartedly agree. Greenhouse gas emissions are bad for our planet, it's not a matter for debate.
To be clear, we really do not need to and should not be having to use our time 'debating' this fantastical nonsense in 2025. There are enough real bits of actual climate science to do. The collective brainpower expended on this by so many scientists could have been -much- better spent.
Great article in the NYTimes about our comment to the DOE about their climate report.

I'm excited to contribute to the next IPCC report as a lead author for the WG1 chapter on "Global projections of Earth system responses across scales". We'll be assessing forcings of climate change and the responses across the Earth systems, including my favorite component 🥁... the carbon cycle.
