All that being said, I always make a point of being polite to voice assistant software, and I raised my son to do the same.

It's not Pascal's wager, I just didn't want him to learn the habit of yelling and taking out his frustrations at assistants (who are usually voiced female-coded too)

These men are chasing their own personal immortailty over piles of corpses. They're the closest thing we have to vampires tbh.

The Singularitarian fantasists who want us to elevate machines to consciousness are not interested in the happiness of all beings.

They want to degrade the biological body to a mere vessel, one they can discard. It's bunk theology for men who believe they're too smart and special to die.

The desire to treat AI as having a soul is based on the same pathological terror at their own mortality that drives these same men to invest in life extension foundations.

If the AI has a soul, then consciousness is code and their own consciousness can be uploaded and thus they can live forever.

This is narcissism masquerading as philosophy — the technophile elite are not recognizing a new soul in AI, they're falling in love with their creation, staring at their own reflection in a digital pool.

It is the ultimate in solipsism and has its roots in a pathological fear and denial of death.

My god, when Tucker is the voice of reason near the end, you know you’re one of the biggest pieces of shit. And Fuentes is a giant one. An incredibly pathetic one too.

Hi, I'm a NY times bestseller and a multiple National Magazine Award-winning journalist.

I've had FT jobs or multiple gigs going ever since I moved to New York a decade ago.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

I think it shocks some of my students but I emphasize that having a job outside journalism is fine and common. I also toss in practical industry talk that’s not strictly in the curriculum. On Monday we discussed contracts: “for-hire,” indemnity, kill fees, scope of work. Freelancers need to know!
If you have ever thought that my journalism or my first book were net positives for the world, understand that they probably would not exist if I did not have a spouse who paid the mortgage. If I'd been a solo earner/parent, I likely would have left criticism, journalism or book writing long ago.
And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.

Peter Beinart has been called out by Palestinians on Twitter before - he made some “what about my feelings?” comments back in 2023 if I recall. It sparked a lot of discourse on leftist Twitter at the time. This is akin to breaking a boycott of apartheid South Africa.

Such unfortunate behavior from Beinart, there’s just not excuse, you really can’t violate the boycott and support it at the same time, it’s just not possible. You won’t get much out of what you’re doing in the first place, Israeli universities are a bubble in comparison to what’s outside of them.
