This is the genius of the Portland protests - they make the claims of lawlessness look not just wrong, but comical

Great resource! I'm excited to share this with some of my therapy clients, and use it personally with my own friends/fam.

here it is! my CareFax 1.2 update, with a link to a template I made on Canva so you make your own edits, fill it in digitally, or just print copies to try it out with your people IRL.

I would love your feedback and to hear about your experiences if you try it out!

carerax
In a world that profits from our exhaustion and isolation, taking care of each other is a radical act. CareFax is a body-centered friendship tool that helps us emember how to live differently-to build webs of care strong enough to hold us through grief, burnout, and transformation.
CareFax is a starting place for conversations about mutual aid, community care, nd tenderness, designed to help your people show up for you (and you for them) in ways that resist the myth of self-sufficiency.
Because we can't do this all on our own. While corporations and self-help grifters try and sell us the idea that the right thing will cure us or make us happy, what we actually need is each other. start your own carerax:
Gather your friends, family, or community members and fill out your CareFax forms-either together over tea, or on your own time. You can print them and keep them in a binder, or make a digital folder that you can update as your life shifts. You can even keep your own CareFax filled out to share with folks as your relationships grow and blossom.
Over time, your CareFax can become more than a set of forms, but a practice of collective tenderness and interdependence. miigwech, ashley fairbanks find me at ziibiing.com or as ziibing on all socials

This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.

HAPPENING NOW — This morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order establishing “ICE-free zones.”

“That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” Johnson said to applause.

Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

NEW—US Department of Education sent out standard Out of Office language to employees on Wednesday in light of shutdown. Later yesterday, workers tell me they found someone had updated their auto-responses without consent to a new one blaming Democrats.

Version of original on left, updated on right:
Thank you for your email. There is a temporary shutdown of the U.S. government due to a lapse in appropriations. I will respond to your message as soon as possible after the temporary shutdown ends. Please visit ED.gov for the latest information on the
Department's operational status.
Thank you. Thank you for contacting me. On September 19, 2025, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5371, a clean continuing resolution. Unfortunately, Democrat Senators are blocking passage of H.R. 5371 in the Senate which has led to a lapse in appropriations. Due to the lapse in appropriations I am currently in furlough status. I will respond to emails once government functions resume.

The GOP controls the whole Federal government. They have to fund it. If they don't, it's their fault. [see how easy that is].

LOVE this easy to understand comm strategy. Don't engage in useless back and forth, instead, reset the frame entirely!

i made a helpful reference
top right: a fractured black rectangle where one half is labeled "autism is bad" and the other side is labeled "FACT CHECK: autistic people are productive members of society".

top left:
WRONG
-negating their frame reinforces it
-starts with what it isn't instead of what it is
- your argument is shaped like their argument

bottom right: large image of Kirby, a pink blob inhaling and the "autism is bad" fragment, labeled THEY'RE DOING EUGENICS

bottom left:
RIGHT
- you eat their frame
-starts with what's actually happening
-contains and explains what they're doing
-your argument is shaped like kirby

After Cuomo resigned in 2021, some commentators pointed out that while national media had lionized him, local political reporters had his number from the start. I think the same was true of Eric Adams.

IME, purposefully shaming others mostly backfires and leads to ppl doubling down, but the capacity to experience and reflect on valid shame is an incredible opportunity to learn. I think the more we reduce "toxic shame," the more other, grounded experiences of shame can become useful 3/
duchessofhazard.bsky.social
On the community level, "productive shame" is when there is a consequence for harmful behavior outside of a shared value system. e.g. letting kidsknow when they are bullying someone (w/o labeling them a bully). It stops the behavior and hopefully sparks self-reflection w/o a permanent label 2/
duchessofhazard.bsky.social
It is a tricky distinction! I think that individual "productive shame" is at best the awareness of when my behaviors and values are out of alignment. As in, sometimes I feel ashamed because I am not being the person I want to be, and it can be fuel for my development (if I can tolerate it) 1/

it's a great interview, and what's striking is that at the end of the day both klein and coates believe in winning people over. the difference is that coates thinks you do this by telling them the truth, and klein thinks you do it by empathizing with them and recognizing their concerns as Real
perrybaconjr.bsky.social
This was revealing. Worth reading. The basic demand is that Coates spend less time thinking/writing his true feelings and more time playing political strategist. Klein asks him over and over him to do Dem strategy; he says no, over and over. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/28/o...

A must-read essay for this moment by @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social. I think a lot about shame as a therapist; toxic shame (e.g., "I am inherently bad and helpless to change that"), is not the same as experiencing shame for harmful behaviors that undermine a pluralistic society.

One of the big asymmetries in US politics is how Republicans getting more votes from men is a major crisis for the Democratic party that must be addressed, perhaps by abandoning some values, while Democrats getting more votes from women is a nonissue for the Republican Party, not worth discussing.
