I always admired Kaleb Horton's writing so much and am terribly sorry to hear of his death. It's a long list of singular writers who didn't have the careers they should have because of the people, places, and things that killed online media, but his name is right at the very top. I hate all of it.

I don’t want to play video games against strangers online. I want to play against The Computer or, occasionally, another human being in the same room as me
i don't want to hear your most boomer complaint. what's your most millennial complaint?

Tom Brady is the only NFL broadcaster I've ever heard who doesn't sound absolutely out of his mind with delight at getting to call a play involving a stiff-arm. He was reaching for it, he knows he's supposed to do it, but he just lacks the buccal fat at this point.

Most embarrassing thing I've enjoyed recently: The "In Search of Darkness" movies, extremely long pseudo-docs in which 80s horror movie creators/stars (and eventually fans) talk about their work. That's it. Like 6-hour convention panels. And I loved it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oTK...

It amuses me no end that some of the most devalued and underpaid human roles are those that robots will continue to struggle with for a long time to come
Restaurants are experimenting with ways to automate their operations. But despite high interest in robots in the kitchen and years of effort, human labor is hard to replace. nyti.ms/3Woieyr

If I had to capture the essence of “rightwing populism” I think I would cite the time in 1774 Virginia slaveowner Richard Henry Lee wanted to protest new taxes levied by the British so he forced his slaves to protest the tax hike on his behalf with banners denouncing the taxes as "chains of slavery"

I mistakenly identified Glen Powell (actor) as Glen Perkins (retired Minnesota Twins closer) and can see the entire rest of my life from here. It's nothing but this, in increasing intensity and frequency, all the way to the end of the line. Honestly it feels amazing.

A funny thing that happens this time of year is my wife gets genuinely salty that Santa gets the credit for the big presents. I think she sees it as a sort of stolen valour.

One very drunken night in Shanghai, a Chinese friend - a director - asked my friend and me to explain what “typical Hollywood story structure” meant. This placemat was the best we could do.

"What do you mean the sign about looking upon my works and despairing is still standing??? No! That's the worst possible - if the *works* are gone but the sign is still up then I'm gonna look like a fucken dickhead! Why didn't you make the works out of the same shit you made the sign out of?!"

this was actually a really important lesson something awful taught: you gotta just toss out the pricks who were smart enough to always play within the rules. forums don't benefit from having Moriartys
