Now, in 2026, the Community Board for Police Accountability is seated and beginning its work!

That is not symbolic.

That is structural change.

Their voice matters. Their independence matters. Their integrity matters.

This took years. Today we honor that work.

Onward. ✊🏾

Video games made me an artist
The myth that "video games make you violent" is very funny to me, because in my experience video games make you a freelance writer

There's white men on this website today talking about "AI won, pack it up".

So, as ever and always, listen to Black women.
More people should listen to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social

Ian McKellen is soooo good! I saw him perform it from this video from 12 years ago (!!) which has some additional history and context. It's incredible how he's just as if not more powerful now www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjEA...

This captured the dignity and bravery I witness in Portlanders every day. Started tearing up reading it. From kids to elderly people, everyone showed bravery and a discipline to look out for their neighbors that day.

I love the people of this city so much.
ICE tear gassed a bunch of children on Saturday. This was a massive escalation of force. They were shooting tear gas at the back of the crowd, it took these unmasked people maybe 3-5 minutes in the cloud of tear gas to escape in without trampling. www.theverge.com/policy/87278...

Neat anthropocene thread
Here's a tale of how nature triumphs in the end. And the Slag Queens!

Steel mills dumped molten slag in parts of Chicago and nearby areas. The slag hardened in layers up to 15 feet deep.

These places became barren wastelands. Other industries dumped hot ash and cinders there.

No WONDER clementines are so good! Now to hope I can find a supply next year...
Citrus × clementina is a hybrid of a mandarin and an orange, and there are huge groves of them in California. They are definitely not extinct. They are available only from Nov-Jan though. Cuties are produced by a different company now than they used to be, which probably affected labeling.

I haven't seen Sinner's Grammy wins mentioned anywhere else yet, another reason to support Black newsrooms!

So glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves in the awards, makes me hopeful for it's Oscar prospects (even if the Oscars are still systemically problematic)

public radio needs to always exist because otherwise how will you turn on your car radio after dropping your friend off at the train at 11:56pm and hear 3 minutes of droning atonal music, followed by a smooth-voiced announcer saying “thanks for joining us for this hour of bug music”

For me, that also means making claims in one’s own voice. “This is a world that I want,” rather than “This is just common sense” or “This proposal has bipartisan appeal.”
It’s time to *do politics* again. Stop being led by the nose on polling. Stop trying to perfect your rhetoric.

It’s time to think in heterodox, bold, and creative ways. That’s not a left-right prescription. It’s about moving beyond the tinkering approach we’ve had for decades. That’s dead.
There's massive opposition to Trump. Yet our institutions don't act as sufficient constraints on a president when he's determined to plunge us into authoritarian lawlessness.

Elrod and I end up agreeing this should inform what's next (discussing @jvl.bsky.social):

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

They just heavily gassed. Went thru my full face again. the medics were saying it was going through their masks too. There were very young children present. This is the road nearby ten minutes after the gassing started. The gas is still visible as I type this.

A big group stopped outside the ICE facility and federal agents dropped several rounds of chemical ammunitions. The crowd leaving the scene was the most chaotic I’ve ever seen it and the gas was the most intense. I don’t know how/why the gassing started.

A critical mistake I see is that we often fight the people who are closest to us,not those who are the most culpable.

Why? Because they are a sympathetic ear. They’re safe. We leave out key players because we take it for granted we can’t shift them with organizing and pressure.

We can and we must
