A huge night for Democrats:

—They flip Miami's mayorship.
—They flip a state House district in Georgia that had voted Trump by 13%.
—They keep Albuquerque's mayorship, while the liberal faction flips city council.
—And they get big overperformances (+18 & +22) in 2 Florida specials.

Life is crazy. @zachstafford.bsky.social texted me last night. “Elizabeth Warren wants to talk to us about Hollywood.”

Me: 😮😅
We have a lot of questions about the WB-Netflix-Paramount (?) deal so we got on the phone with @warren.senate.gov! To start, is this deal even legal????

we are going to win (and in fact are already winning) but holy shit this is bleak
Trump: "Ilhan Omar, whatever the hell her name is. With her little turban. I love her. She comes in, does nothing but bitch ... we ought to get her the hell out ... she's here illegally."

The crowd in Pennsylvania then starts chanting "send her back!"

since using Calbiri (easier for visually impaired people) rather than TNR costs literally nothing, this is just ableism for its own sake. these are the kind of people who resent seeing a wheelchair ramp.
Marco Rubio ordered diplomats to return to using Times New Roman font in official communications, calling his predecessor's decision to adopt Calibri a “wasteful” diversity move
Rubio Stages Font Coup: Times New Roman Ousts Calibri
The secretary of state called it a "wasteful" diversity move, according to an internal department cable seen by Reuters.

As a teacher of undergraduate writing--writing workshops also teach young people how to respectfully give and gracefully receive criticism on work that means something to them, an invaluable skill in any line of work.
This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

ALA is disappointed and concerned with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow a lower court ruling in Little v. Llano County stand. This decision will significantly restrict the freedom to read in public libraries across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

CONFIRMED: Eileen Higgins, a Democrat, will be the new mayor of Miami.

She'll be the city's first Democratic mayor since the 1990s. She flipped the office from Republicans, and does so easily. She leads the DeSantis-endorsed Emilio González 59/41 right now with most ballots counted.

I mean, in what sense will you be able to say the college “survived”?

"Faculty grew too powerful and too romantic about their role"

Lolll, wtf.

Faculty rank just below the IT guy and first-year advisors who recently started the job. We get exactly zero votes on anything. Everything is "advisory." Shared governance hasn't existed at any point during my career.
Yes we all agree that this is the reason colleges are in trouble

So love wobbegongs. Everything is good about the wobbegong. Its name. Its flattened Oscar the Grouch face. Its frondy bits. Its lazy life as a hungry rug. And it’s a shark. Outstanding animal 10/10
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

NEW: People moving brazenly to Texas to run for political office is nothing new. But now a confluence of events, from redistricting to dysfunctional infighting on the right, has everyone from the ShamWow Guy to Mark Teixeria moving to Texas to run for congress: www.chron.com/culture/arti...
They're not from Texas. But they want to represent you in Congress.

And yet…not all writing endures. In this painting from c1490, we see a man taking down notes on a wax tablet. You can see the metal stylus he uses has a “rake” at one end for erasing once he needs to re-use the wax.

This is horrific and exactly what those of us in Black studies, gender studies, women’s studies have been warning our colleagues in the sciences about. Their seeming neutrality will not save them.
Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.
