Bell looked up at the moon, low in the sky, and couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. Something bad was about to happen.

Carrie never seemed to fancy walks on the beach, and yet she'd insisted on taking one tonight. Halfway down the sandy shoreline, she stopped, turning to Bell and releasing their hand. Bell met her gaze, already hearing the words before they were even spoken. “Bell... I think we owe it to ourselves to admit this isn’t working out, and let each other go," Carrie said, her tone even and collected. "It’s for the best.”

The words stung every time, but still Bell smiled, because it was all they could do to keep the tears from welling in their eyes. “Maybe it is,” they murmured softly, their tone also carefully controlled. They couldn't let it waver, couldn't let the pain show. “But… before we do, one last kiss?”

Carrie shifted her weight from one foot to the other, frowning gently at the request. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“Please?” Bell asked, taking a small step closer and offering their hand. “It would bring me closure.” It wouldn't.

Carrie sighed, but nodded. “Okay. I guess.”

Bell lifted her own hand to her face, pretending to hide her expression as she slipped a smoky marble into her mouth. Their hand fell back to their side as they stepped forward to meet their soon-to-be ex-girlfriend halfway and bring their lips together.

“Fuck a duck!” Cin yelled, stomping his foot. He tried again to loosen the rough metal chains around his wrists. He had been locked up for hours making no progress with the bindings. Sighing heavily, Cin flopped down onto the meager pile of straw in the corner of the small, dank cell.
“Did you know that ducks have really weird penises?” A voice outside his cell spoke. It was too dark for Cin to see into the other cells. He hadn’t even realized any other spaces were occupied.
“I don’t actually spend time thinking about animal dicks so…no I didn’t know that.” Cin tried scraping the manacles against the stone walls. The runes etched into the sides dampened his magic. If he could distort enough of them, the spell might become inert. Although, he couldn’t exactly control his size shifting so he’d still be in chains but it would be an improvement. Right?

Ultimately, the head was to blame.
Alexios had received it three mornings before, delivered with its own honor escort, in a chest of fine, dark oak, chased with finishings of gold. It had been a lovely chest, and the head inside, nestled in folds of velvet, was lovely too. It was the bust of a young woman, carved out of white marble to capture her refined, delicate features. Alexios had set the bust on a table in his private apartments, hoping that it was a symptom of the medium that made her face so cold.
Alexios had posed for a sculptor, too. The woman had sketched his face, first, in charcoal. Then she had made the bust of simple clay, forming the raw, wet earth into Alexios’s cheeks, nose, and lips. She used the clay bust as a model for the marble one, and after a month it was delivered to the royal villa. Alexios’s parents, the king and queen, had praised the artist’s skill in capturing their son’s look so handsomely. Alexios had forced a smile, nodding and agreeing, all the while thinking that his own blank, sightless white eyes were unsettling, bordering on creepy.
