I finally got around to emailing council to remind them that car ownership costs average people over $700,000 over their working life.

#bikehfx and transit are huge affordability measures

What doesn’t seem to be on the table: it’s obvious the existing scheme of having the urban core pay for suburban sprawl, and have new home owners and renters pay more taxes than long-time home owners isn’t working. But they will try literally anything but fixing that

Andy Fillmore wants to take away dedicated bus lanes by opening them up to “high occupancy vehicles” (HOV).
That’s any vehicle with just 2+ people! 🚗🛻🚚🚙🚗🛻🚚💨

Whether you drive, bike, or use transit, this is bad news.
Halifax councillors considering carpool lanes to help ease traffic congestion - Halifax | Globalnews.ca
The mayor said he believes moving ahead with high-occupancy (HOV) lanes could help the municipality take control of its own roadways and planning.

I’ve started a slack to try to organize Halifax Regional Municipality 2026 budget advocacy better. We’re specifically pushing for fiscal sustainability and actual serious consideration of revenue, and against frivolous nickel and diming, and want to organize letter writing and council presentations.

I'm at the point in my life where I'm happy to pay a little extra for a little more legroom. I want the tax version of that!
The great thing about taxes? Small monthly payment gets you cool, useful stuff.

It's like, dunno, a subscription for some of the nice features of living in a city?

Gotta say I'd rather have the premium subscription than the free version
This is what kills me about all of this: property taxes aren't that big an expense for me at the end of the day and TBH I wouldn't even mind paying more if it meant we could live in a better city. But louder voices are happy to burn it all down just to save a buck

THIS is the plan @andyfillmorehfx.bsky.social is pitching so that he can keep taxes low for his landlord buddies upset because their parasitic business plans don’t work. Making literally everyone else pay so his friends can avoid paying their fair share.

Absolutely disgusting.

Do any of these transit cuts, other service cuts (or any of the other unlisted cuts that could show up on March 4th) sound awful to you?

Want to join a conversation about how we can fight for a better, more sustainable Halifax?

We’re starting a Halifax Fiscal Sustainability chat in Slack.
The list of things council is considering cutting in order to keep taxes “flat” is insane. (From Sam Austin’s website). Call your councillor and tell them you won’t support them if they support these cuts.

It’s actually very strange that a city requires you to hop in a car and drive for everything. It doesn’t have to be this way.

#hfxws 1/2: I rode from Flinn Park to the Brewery Market & back this morning.

Protected bike lanes (South Park, Lower Water, Hollis, Brunswick & Rainnie) have icy patches, from surrounding snowbanks melt and refreeze. SP has some icy snow boulders. LW has sections with hard packed snow and ice.

#hfxws 1/2. I rode from Flinn Park to Northwood Terrace and back. Here's what I found. The Stuart Graham Monolith is clear to the asphalt and well salted. Almon St bike lane is passable w/ some icy bits. Local streets in Westmount and North end bikeway are all clear. Mind the potholes on Creighton.

I want to see a pie chart of budget operating costs showing the infinitessimal slice that is library/ transit/ bike network completion.

Then I want the time spent debating converted to cost in salaries on the nearly invisible slice. Maybe include the salary costs of redundant staff reports.

This means a significant modal shift away from driving for every trip to riding for more trips 🚍⛴️🚲🛴.

In the Netherlands, cycling and public transport aren’t competitors—they’re teammates. Invest in one, and the other gets stronger.

Nowhere is this clearer than at railway stations, where every design decision sharpens the bike infrastructure network and makes the door-to-door journey even smoother.
